Apple’s Big “Wonderlust” Event Is Business as Usual

Image Source: Apple By Brian Nelson, CFA On September 12, Apple Inc. (AAPL) hosted its widely-anticipated “Wonderlust” event. The market was anticipating several new products, and Apple delivered. The firm’s iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15, Apple Watch Series 9, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 will go a long way to retaining share in smartphones and wearable devices, but the company opted to leave prices unchanged. Many had been expecting a price increase, but we’re not reading too much into Apple’s decision to leave them unchanged, given economic uncertainty in the U.S., Huawei’s release of its latest phone (the Mate 60 Pro) and rising geopolitical tensions between the U.S. and China. The iPhone 15 Pro frankly looks awesome, and it is … Read more

In the News: Lockheed Martin, Apple, Enbridge

Image Source: Björn Lammers By Brian Nelson, CFA On September 6, Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio holding Lockheed Martin (LMT) announced in a regulatory filing that it expects to deliver 97 F-35 fighter jets during 2023, down from its previous expectation of 100-120 planes. Reports indicate that the production hiccup occurred at supplier L3Harris Technologies (LHX) with respect to the development of the aircraft’s integrated core processor, pushing back Lockheed’s delivery timeline for the combat jet. Though the news is not good, we’re not reading much into it. Lockheed noted that it continues to produce F-35s at a pace of 156 per year. We’re viewing this as a mere timing issue and not making any changes to our $440 per share fair … Read more

Apple’s Looming ‘Watch X’ Likely a Game Changer in Smartwatches

Image Source: Wiyre Media By Brian Nelson, CFA Apple (AAPL) is expected to do a refresh of its Apple Watch this year, but the changes won’t be as significant to draw many to upgrade. However, as we look out to fiscal 2024 and fiscal 2025, exciting things could happen. According to a report from Bloomberg, the “Watch X,” marking the 10th anniversary of the rollout of the first Apple Watch, is targeted to include a blood-pressure monitoring tool, among other upgrades. Not only do we think a blood-pressure monitoring tool will drive considerable adoption from many that do not have a smartwatch, but it could also drive a huge market share shift to the device from Samsung (SSNLF) (SSGFF) and Alphabet’s … Read more

Berkshire’s Stake in Apple Has Been a Boon for Shareholders

By Brian Nelson, CFA Warren Buffett is one of the greatest qualitative teachers of the discounted cash-flow (DCF) model, also known as enterprise valuation, without saying as much. He doesn’t like dividends in part because he knows they are a reduction to the intrinsic value of Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A) (BRK.B). He understands that there are not really “value” and “growth” stocks because growth is but a component of valuation. An entity that is growing free cash flow at a pace much larger than that of another company should warrant a higher valuation multiple, of course. Valuation multiples tell us very little about a company’s intrinsic value. That’s what the DCF is for. Image: Apple has been a blessing for Berkshire Hathaway. Image … Read more

Apple Breaks Through Uptrend; Expect Modest Market Pullback

Image: Apple has been a strong performer thus far in 2023, but the stock has broken through its uptrend. Further selling may be ahead of shares. In light of Apple’s weighting across major market indices, investors should expect a modest pullback in the markets. By Brian Nelson, CFA On August 3, Apple Inc. (AAPL) reported third-quarter fiscal 2023 results that gave the market a reason to sell its shares. Though the iPhone maker’s quarterly results largely matched the consensus forecasts for both the top and bottom line, year-over-year declines in iPhone, Mac, and iPad sales, while expected, were evident in the quarter, even as its Services business grew meaningfully from last year’s period. A technical breakdown in its uptrend sparked … Read more

Top Dividend-Related News: MSFT, AAPL, ASML

Image: Microsoft’s shares hit a record high in July! By Brian Nelson, CFA Microsoft’s (MSFT) shares hit an all-time high July 18 on news that it would raise prices on its Office products to account for the integration of AI into its tools. We’ve yet to test the new features that are collectively called 365 Copilot, but the new features will add $30/month to the overall price of the software, a meaningful percentage step-change that seems to be quite a needle-mover. Copilot, at the moment, will be a voluntary upgrade, but we think that over time, AI may become an entrenched feature across Microsoft’s entire product line-up, whereupon average selling prices across its customer base will meaningfully increase. AI may … Read more

A decade ago, funds managed with Environmental, Social, and Governance (‘ESG’) standards in mind were a small part of the investing universe at-large, but that is no longer the case. Expect Huge Equity Returns This Decade, Much More Volatility However

Image: Without question, the stylistic area of large cap growth has been the place to be for almost 15 years now. We think it remains the place to be. Brian Nelson, CFA The game has changed folks. The flooding of the markets with liquidity during the Great Financial Crisis [GFC] and the bailout of the banks in 2007-2009 marked the beginning of a new “regime” that we now live in. It wasn’t until the collapse of the markets during COVID-19, however, that the belief these markets would continue to move ever higher was reinforced. Where is the risk? What does “Lehman” even mean anymore? “Lehman” was not risk – “Lehman” was a generational buying opportunity. What was the worst global … Read more

Apple’s ‘Vision Pro’ Not in Our Valuation Model; Expect Upside

Image: Apple released its first major product since the Apple Watch in the Vision Pro on June 5. The device opens the door to the era of spatial computing and is priced at $3,499. By Brian Nelson, CFA Apple (AAPL) unveiled its Vision Pro at the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference on June 5. We were impressed with the new major product launch, its first since the release of the Apple Watch nearly a decade ago but estimating the total market opportunity for a $3,499 device is a difficult one. The Vision Pro will be available in early 2024 and will compete in many areas with the Meta (META) Quest, and we expect Apple’s annual numbers come next year to be … Read more
