The Role of Luck in Investing and How To Think About It

Dear members: — For every Amazon (AMZN) that made it, there are hundreds, maybe thousands, from the dot-com era that didn’t. Very few remember Pets.com or etoys.com, both of which went belly up during the dot-com meltdown. For every Tesla (TSLA), there is a DeLorean Motor Co. We might have completely forgotten about DeLorean were it not for the blockbuster movie, Back To The Future, that immortalized its futuristic sports car. — For every streaming enterprise like Netflix (NFLX), there is a Napster that failed. Most of us probably don’t even remember the original Napster, which encountered legal troubles before closing shop shortly after the dot-com bust. For every Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL), there’s an AltaVista or Netscape. For every Apple (AAPL), there … Read more

Report Updates — Did You Throw the Baby Out with the Bathwater?

Hi everyone: Brian here. I hope you are having a nice Labor Day holiday weekend.  We wanted to bring your attention to a number of stock report updates. Both Alibaba (BABA) and Korn/Ferry (KFY) have registered one of the highest ratings (9) on the Valuentum Buying Index. To garner such a high rating, a company would have to be considered undervalued on a discounted cash-flow basis, undervalued on a relative value basis, as well as exhibiting strong technical/momentum indicators. Alibaba looks like it could pop quite a bit from current levels after technically basing for months, and while risks related to the name are tremendously high given rising U.S.-China tensions, shares sure look undervalued to us. Korn/Ferry’s shares also look … Read more

A New Computing Era Has Begun — Nvidia Delivers Yet Again

By Brian Nelson, CFA When we first wrote that Nvidia (NVDA) would power this market higher back in May, the firm had just put up one of the most prolific earnings beats I had ever seen. I’d have to go back almost 20 years to the invention of Apple’s iPod click-wheel technology to remember something that came close. Well, on August 23, Nvidia just put up another monster quarter, this one the second of its fiscal year 2024, beating top-line and bottom-line consensus estimates by a huge margin for the period ending July 30. We’ve raised our fair value estimate of Nvidia considerably following the blockbuster second-quarter performance and third-quarter outlook, released today, and the race is on to adopt … Read more

ESG Newsletter $1,000.00 Pay now “The investing landscape has changed dramatically over the past decade and part of that transformation has involved US households placing a much greater emphasis on “ethical” and “sustainable” investing strategies. A decade ago, funds managed with Environmental, Social, and Governance (‘ESG’) standards in mind were a small part of the investing universe at-large, but that is no longer the case. Data from Morningstar notes that US funds considered “sustainable” reported $21.5 billion in net inflows during the first quarter of 2021, up from $20.5 billion in net inflows in the fourth quarter of 2020 and roughly five times greater than the … Read more

Top Dividend-Related News: WBA, KFY, IBM, UNH, OXY

Image Source: Simon Cunningham By Brian Nelson, CFA Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA) is yielding ~6.6% on a forward estimated basis. Though this sounds like a hefty dividend yield worth scooping up, the Walgreen’s story is much more complicated these days than it ever was due to the firm’s wheeling and dealing the past number of years. The company’s third-quarter fiscal 2023 results, released June 27, showed decent revenue expansion, but earnings per share fell $0.20 in the quarter versus the same period a year-ago. The company continues to offload shares of AmerisourceBergen Corp. (ABC) that it owns, and it lowered its fiscal year 2023 adjusted earnings per share guidance to the range of $4.00-$4.05 from $4.45-$4.65 previously. Though Walgreens has … Read more

Oracle Hits All-Time Highs; Larry Ellison Pumps AI Opportunity

Image: Newsletter portfolio holding Oracle surges to all-time highs! “Oracle’s Gen2 Cloud has quickly become the number 1 choice for running Generative AI workloads. Why? Because Oracle has the highest performance, lowest cost GPU cluster technology in the world. NVIDIA (NVDA) themselves are using our clusters, including one with more than 4,000 GPUs, for their AI infrastructure. Our GPU clusters are built using the highest-bandwidth and lowest-latency RDMA network—and scale up to 32,000 GPUs. As a result, cutting edge companies doing LLM development such as Mosaic ML, Adept AI, Cohere plus 30 other AI development companies have recently signed contracts to purchase more than $2 billion of capacity in Oracle’s Gen2 Cloud.” – Chairman and CTO Larry Ellison By Brian … Read more

Case Study: How to Assess Earnings Quality

By Brian Nelson, CFA Let’s first become acquainted with why assessing earnings quality is important. According to the Research Foundation of the CFA Institute:  Understanding the quality of earnings is an essential part of processing and interpreting information. A high-quality earnings number will (1) reflect current operating performance, (2) be a good indicator of future operating performance, (3) and fairly annuitize the intrinsic value of the company.  At Valuentum, there are five basic areas that we evaluate to assess the quality of a firm’s earnings: a) is the company’s earnings growth driven by higher-quality revenue expansion or lower-quality cost-cutting measures (can the trajectory of earnings be sustained with continued revenue increases because cost-cutting, by definition, is a finite activity?); b) … Read more

Not Worried About Global PC Demand Weakness

Image Source: IDC By Brian Nelson, CFA On April 9, International Data Corporation (IDC) issued preliminary findings for the first quarter of 2023 for global personal computer (PC) shipments in its Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker. The results were a bit surprising, with the firm noting that “weak demand, excess inventory, and a worsening macroeconomic climate were all contributing factors for the precipitous drop in shipments of traditional PCs during the first quarter of 2023.” According to the IDC report, global PC shipments fell 29% to 56.9 million compared to the first quarter of 2022. Apple (AAPL) experienced the biggest year-over-year percentage decline, where shipments fell more than 40%. Dell Technologies (DELL), Lenovo (LNVGY) (LNVGF) and ASUS experienced declines … Read more

How the Payment of a Dividend Impacts Intrinsic Value Estimation

“Dividends are a transfer of cash to the shareholders that the shareholders already owned.” By Brian Nelson, CFA Many investors use the strategy of dividend growth investing as a means to generate increasing income in their retirement portfolios to stay ahead of inflation, or as a means to grow an income stream in the decades before retirement. Though we think such a strategy has tremendous merit, we think it’s important for readers to understand the mechanics of how a cash dividend payment impacts the valuation (intrinsic worth) of a company. How the Payment of a Dividend Impacts Valuation (Intrinsic Worth) In this article, let’s walk through the valuation adjustments we perform when a company pays a dividend to hammer … Read more
