Will Chipotle Serve Breakfast?

Amid news about the lack of Fed tapering and the launch of Apple’s iPhone 5S (click ticker for report: ), news broke that fast food chain Chipotle (click ticker for report: ) was testing coffee products at one of its Washington, D.C. locations. Naturally, the question arises: is Chipotle going to serve breakfast? Why We Think It’s a Great Idea There’s little doubt that the consistent comparable same-store sales growth from the likes of Panera (click ticker for report: ), Chipotle, and Noodles & Co. (NDLS) suggests that meals eaten outside of the house continue to rise. At the moment, we’re comfortable saying that McDonald’s (click ticker for report: ) possesses the strongest breakfast offering with a mix of inexpensive … Read more

Total revenue increased 13% year-over-year to $3.7 billion, roughly in-line with consensus estimates. Earnings per share jumped 28% year-over-year to $0.55, a few pennies above consensus expectations. Increased store productivity continues to be the major driver behind Starbucks’ fantastic revenue growth. Global same-store sales advanced 8% year-over-year on traffic that was 7% higher than that in the year-ago period. Same-store sales increased across all geographies, but the US was particularly strong, with comp growth of 9% year-over-year. Only a few years ago did the market wonder if Starbucks’ premium coffee products were simply too expensive to keep consumers coming back. We think that … Read more

Lack of Cost Control and Demand Risk: The Story of Monster Beverage

Earlier this week, energy drink producer Monster Beverage (click ticker for report: ) reported lackluster first quarter results due to lower sales growth and a lack of cost containment. Revenue was well below consensus expectations, growing just 7% year-over-year to $484 million compared to the last several quarters of double-digit revenue growth. Earnings fell 10% year-over-year to $0.37 per share, which failed to come close to the consensus estimate. According to Monster’s management, the entire energy drink industry experienced weak sales growth during the first quarter relative to the powerful double digit growth rates the industry has become accustomed to. What’s driving the weakness? It appears to be largely related to health issues. The FDA provides a report describing the negative … Read more

Menu Innovation Helps Drive Strong Growth at Starbucks

Coffee retailer Starbucks (click ticker for report: ) reported solid results for the first quarter of its 2013 fiscal year. Sales surged 11% year-over-year to $3.8 billion, roughly in-line with consensus estimates. Earnings were also solid, growing 14% year-over-year to $0.57 per share, also equal to the consensus expectations. Although most food and beverage retailers are looking to grow internationally, Starbucks posted great results in its Americas segment, where revenue jumped 10% on same-store sales growth of 7%. At the firm’s annual meeting, it explained the need to open more locations in the US, and strong results suggest management is correct. The firm’s operating margin declined 50 basis points year-over-year to 20.8% due to litigation and Hurricane Sandy, though we … Read more

Green Mountain Posts Strong Revenue Growth

The much maligned Green Mountain (click ticker for report: ) reported better than anticipated fourth quarter results Tuesday afternoon. Revenue surged 33% year-over-year to $946.7 million, which was better than expected, though boosted by an additional selling week. Earnings, helped by a 3.1 million-share stock-buyback, grew 36% year-over-year to a better-than-expected $0.64 per share, on a non-GAAP basis. One of the firm’s largest concerns, inventories, grew 14% year-over-year, which was much slower than the sales rate. Considering the SEC inquiry into the company’s accounting practices, we’ve been particularly focused on the firm’s financial statements. Accounts payable increased only 5% year-over-year, though we did see meaningful spikes in accrued expenses (up 44% year-over-year) and current income tax payable (up 204% year-over-year). … Read more

Di-worsification? That Could Be the Starbucks/Teavana Deal

Last Wednesday, Starbucks (click ticker for report: ) announced that it will acquire tea retailer Teavana (TEA) for $15.50 per share in an all cash transaction valued at $620 million. The deal is expected to add one cent to Starbucks’ earnings in 2013. Though the deal represented a significant premium to the recent share price, the acquisition price is below Teavana’s IPO price, which will certainly set off some shareholder lawsuits. We’re more interested in the impact it will have on Starbucks. Unlike the recent lack of innovation we’ve seen at a company such as McDonald’s (click ticker for report: ), Starbucks hasn’t been afraid to make drastic moves to drive store traffic and keep the brand relevant. In addition … Read more
