Latest Report Updates Reveal Tremendous Dividend Strength at Walmart

By Brian Nelson, CFA Our latest report updates showcased one very big observation, and that was the tremendous dividend strength of Walmart (WMT). The big box retailer’s Dividend Cushion ratio is rock-solid, and improved inventory management has worked wonders on operating cash flow this year, driving it to $18.2 billion during the six months ended July 31 from $9.24 billion in the same period a year ago, all the while organized retail theft remains a huge industry-wide problem. Though shares of Walmart are widely followed and are fairly valued on the basis of our discounted cash-flow process, we stand in awe of the company’s resurgence in free cash flow generation and believe that the firm offers a nice foundation to … Read more

Report Updates — Did You Throw the Baby Out with the Bathwater?

Hi everyone: Brian here. I hope you are having a nice Labor Day holiday weekend.  We wanted to bring your attention to a number of stock report updates. Both Alibaba (BABA) and Korn/Ferry (KFY) have registered one of the highest ratings (9) on the Valuentum Buying Index. To garner such a high rating, a company would have to be considered undervalued on a discounted cash-flow basis, undervalued on a relative value basis, as well as exhibiting strong technical/momentum indicators. Alibaba looks like it could pop quite a bit from current levels after technically basing for months, and while risks related to the name are tremendously high given rising U.S.-China tensions, shares sure look undervalued to us. Korn/Ferry’s shares also look … Read more

A New Computing Era Has Begun — Nvidia Delivers Yet Again

By Brian Nelson, CFA When we first wrote that Nvidia (NVDA) would power this market higher back in May, the firm had just put up one of the most prolific earnings beats I had ever seen. I’d have to go back almost 20 years to the invention of Apple’s iPod click-wheel technology to remember something that came close. Well, on August 23, Nvidia just put up another monster quarter, this one the second of its fiscal year 2024, beating top-line and bottom-line consensus estimates by a huge margin for the period ending July 30. We’ve raised our fair value estimate of Nvidia considerably following the blockbuster second-quarter performance and third-quarter outlook, released today, and the race is on to adopt … Read more

Dick’s Sporting Goods Down ~7% Year-to-Date; Sticking with It Long Term

Image Source: Mike Mozart By Brian Nelson, CFA Dividend growth investing continues to face pressure during 2023 as investors have migrated to entities with strong net cash positions, solid free cash flow generation and secular growth prospects, many ideas of which can be found in the areas of big cap tech (XLK) and large cap growth (SCHG). The SPDR S&P Dividend ETF (SDY), which includes high-yielding Dividend Aristocrats, is down more than 4% so far in 2023 on a price-only basis and is off more than 6% over the past year, also on a price-only basis. With interest rates on the rise, the tradeoff between owning a certificate of deposit at the local bank yielding north of 5% and dividend … Read more

Theft Becoming a Huge Problem for Retailers

Image Source: Ben Schuman Theft has always been a problem for retailers, but it has never been as big of a problem as it has been in recent quarters. Emboldened by the lack of police response and employees sometimes getting fired for confronting shoplifters, retail organized crime is on the rise. We’re not talking theft in the millions, or billions, but likely in the tens of billions per year or more across the U.S. Some attribute the rise of organized retail crime to the pandemic, which paved the way for shoplifters to post their loot online in order to make a quick buck. Some retailers are especially feeling the pinch, and recent commentary reveals just how bad retail theft (shrink) … Read more

Home Depot’s Comparable Store Sales Continue Declines, Big Ticket Purchases Slow

By Brian Nelson, CFA Home Depot (HD) is one of the most resilient companies across the retail arena. The firm weathered the Great Financial Crisis [GFC] well and it handled the vicissitudes of the COVID-19 pandemic and aftermath flowingly as it juggled supply chain issues, changing consumer buying preferences, and increased demand as consumers remodeled and upgraded their working and living spaces while cocooning at home. The company’s second-quarter 2023 results, released August 15, came in better than expected, but comparable store sales fell 2% both in aggregate and in the U.S. Though comparable store sales declines improved from bigger declines in the first quarter, Home Depot’s guidance for comparable sales to fall 2%-5% for all of fiscal 2023 indicates … Read more

Apple’s Looming ‘Watch X’ Likely a Game Changer in Smartwatches

Image Source: Wiyre Media By Brian Nelson, CFA Apple (AAPL) is expected to do a refresh of its Apple Watch this year, but the changes won’t be as significant to draw many to upgrade. However, as we look out to fiscal 2024 and fiscal 2025, exciting things could happen. According to a report from Bloomberg, the “Watch X,” marking the 10th anniversary of the rollout of the first Apple Watch, is targeted to include a blood-pressure monitoring tool, among other upgrades. Not only do we think a blood-pressure monitoring tool will drive considerable adoption from many that do not have a smartwatch, but it could also drive a huge market share shift to the device from Samsung (SSNLF) (SSGFF) and Alphabet’s … Read more

Will Crude Oil Prices Hit $100 Again?

By Brian Nelson, CFA If you’ve been reading the headlines, you’ve probably seen these: Michigan gas prices increase to highest in 2023, Florida gas prices reach new 2023 high: AAA, Gas prices are higher again, hitting consumers ‘very directly and very profoundly.’ A month ago, the national average for gas prices stood at $3.54, but they have risen to $3.83, according to AAA. Though these levels are still down from the $4.03 average gallon price a year ago, investors have started to take notice. The intensifying war between Russia and Ukraine coupled with expectations that this hurricane season may be a troubling one have driven crude oil prices to the mid-$80s. The energy sector (XLE) was the place to be … Read more

Berkshire’s Stake in Apple Has Been a Boon for Shareholders

By Brian Nelson, CFA Warren Buffett is one of the greatest qualitative teachers of the discounted cash-flow (DCF) model, also known as enterprise valuation, without saying as much. He doesn’t like dividends in part because he knows they are a reduction to the intrinsic value of Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A) (BRK.B). He understands that there are not really “value” and “growth” stocks because growth is but a component of valuation. An entity that is growing free cash flow at a pace much larger than that of another company should warrant a higher valuation multiple, of course. Valuation multiples tell us very little about a company’s intrinsic value. That’s what the DCF is for. Image: Apple has been a blessing for Berkshire Hathaway. Image … Read more
