The Bounce in Energy and Potash’s “Surprising” Dividend Cut

Nothing like Valuentum’s optimistic article last week, January 21, in Barron’s to get the energy markets popping, “Is Kinder Morgan on Road to Recovery,” would you say? Of course, we say that in jest. The equity markets January 28 were defined by optimism that two of the globe’s major energy resource producers, the cartel OPEC and Russia (RSX), would finally come together to alleviate the pain that has been exerted on the price of the black liquid the past 12-24 months with a “meeting.” What we found to be peculiar, however, is that instead of OPEC letting what turned into a “rumor” run, helping to further drive crude oil prices higher, OPEC delegates quickly denied the talk of a potential … Read more

Chipotle Fourth Quarter Comps Suffer Greatly; Could Qdoba Be the One to Eat Chipotle’s Lunch?

Chipotle’s (CMG) operating performance has come under tremendous pressure in recent months due to a number of reports linking illness in customers to its restaurants. At first, we thought the situation would be relatively contained to just a few dozen instances of sickened customers, but more concerns have come to light since we last commented on the topic. The media is having a field day. Can a company that prides itself on “Food with Integrity” endure, and why so many different causes of illness, from E. coli to salmonella to the norovirus? Could these events mark the beginning of the end of the burrito-making giant’s growth prospects, or is the bad press just a hiccup of indigestion, soon to be … Read more

Value Opportunities Not To Be Found In Footwear Market

Athleisure, a term used to describe athletic-inspired leisure apparel, has been a source of strength for retailers in recent quarters and has found a solid niche in the heart of consumers. Athletic-casual wear has become a popular style choice and continues to be more accepted in a wide variety of social situations. The footwear market is following a similar trend. The dominant player in athletic footwear in the US is Nike (NKE); there are no ifs, ands, or buts about it. The Nike Free franchise–that’s only one of its running shoe franchises–recently eclipsed the $1 billion annual sales rate, which makes it bigger than 7 of the 10 largest shoe brands in the US. With well over $18 billion in … Read more

Things for Your Radar Tuesday

Hearing that: Windows 10 launch will be at the end of July. Positive for Microsoft (MSFT). Teva Pharma (TEVA) and Mylan (MYL) looking to tie the knot. Teva getting a nice bounce. IBM’s (IBM) top-line still weak. No interest in shares. Big Blue is not the blue chip equity it once was. Legacy Reserves (LGCY) cuts dividend. No surprise here. We’ve been expecting this for some time. Under Armour (UA) is too rich for our taste. Shares are off after first-quarter report. Rio Tinto (RIO) sees sharp drop in first-quarter iron ore shipments. We’re not interested in adding. ITW (ITW) suffering from guidance cut. Industrial bellwether supporting case that the industrial economy is slowing a tad. Hasbro (HAS) has a … Read more

Some Wiggle Room, Please

Let’s go around the horn. Staples (SPLS) and Office Depot (ODP) will, in fact, join forces. The duo announced February 4th that Staples will pay $6.3 billion for its rival, valuing Office Depot at $11 per share, a nice premium to its previous day close and relative to our fair value estimate. Management expects to generate at least $1 billion in annualized cost savings. Removing redundant overhead, streamlining distribution and carving out other efficiencies will be par for the course. We also think pricing will ease up a bit, though competition from Walmart (WMT) and Amazon (AMZN) will always be present. We wouldn’t expect Office Depot’s equity to converge to the take-out price until the regulatory review is completed, likely … Read more

Wow…Nike. Wow. Innovation Brews Growth.

Home to some of the strongest brands on the planet, Nike (NKE) is simply a fantastic company. Brand value is quantifiable through the company’s ability to monetize it in the form of future free cash flows, but while the company’s future free cash flows don’t justify scooping up shares at present levels of ~$90 per share, fundamentals at the company have never been stronger. Nike’s fiscal 2015 first quarter results, released September 25, were nothing short of impressive. Revenue jumped 15%, while diluted earnings per share leapt 27% during the period. A shift in mix to higher-margin products, higher average selling prices and continued growth in its higher-margin direct-to-consumer business drove the firm’s gross margin higher. A lower tax rate … Read more

Apple Conference Better Than Expected

It is sometimes with hesitation that we talk about Apple (AAPL) because it is one of the most widely covered stocks. We often try to highlight hidden gems across our coverage universe, but when things are going well…well…things are going well. The iPhone maker has been one of the best performers in the Best Ideas portfolio and Dividend Growth portfolio, and the new products at the September 9 event speak to continued sustainability of strong fundamentals. View event replay here >> The biggest surprise at the event, in our view, was the release of both Apple’s first wearable device (called Apple Watch) and its first payments solution (called Pay). “The Apple Watch is available in two different sizes and comes … Read more
