Nike’s Earnings Expansion Will Continue to Be Challenged

On Thursday, Nike (NKE) reported strong fiscal second-quarter results. Revenue expanded 8% during the period (9% on a currency neutral basis), while diluted earnings per share from continuing operations nudged 4% higher, to $0.59 per share. Sales at its Nike brand expanded in every product type, geography and key category. Sales in its Converse brand advanced 11% on a currency-neutral basis thanks to strong performance in its largest owned markets. Though we liked that gross margins advanced 140 basis points in the period thanks to a mix of higher-margin products, higher prices, and lower input costs, selling and administrative expenses leapt 14%, exceeding the pace of revenue growth. PLG Brands Continues to Drive Wolverine Worldwide

Shoe seller Wolverine Worldwide (click ticker for report: ) posted strong third-quarter results driven largely by former Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio holding Collective Brands’ PLG brands. Revenue surged 9% year-over-year on a pro forma basis and more than doubled on a year-over-year reported basis, to $717 million (modestly exceeding consensus estimates). Earnings per share were even stronger, rising 61% year-over-year to $1.16 (excluding acquisition costs) and coming in handily above consensus expectations. Nike Marks a Strong Start to Earnings Season

After becoming the newest member of the Dow Jones Industrial Average, athletic apparel giant Nike (click ticker for report: ) posted a fantastic start to its 2014 fiscal year. First quarter revenue jumped 8% year-over-year to $7 billion, roughly in-line with consensus estimates. Earnings per share, on the other hand, soared past consensus expectations, growing 37% year-over-year to $0.86. Free cash flow totaled $379 million, equal to 5.4% of net revenue. Product Demand Remains Robust The primary reason behind Nike’s continued strength in the athletic apparel space is the robust demand for its products. Samsung’s Smartwatch Underwhelms

The day many had been waiting for in tech came Wednesday morning as Samsung unveiled its long-rumored smartwatch, dubbed the “Galaxy Gear,” to the public. The Galaxy Gear acts as a compliment to a smartphone, allowing users to check text messages, phone calls, and e-mails, as well as set alarms, run apps, and check the weather. The smartwatch will supposedly integrate seamlessly with the upcoming Galaxy Note III, and it will retail for $300. Is the Worst Behind China?

Summer was not very kind to the Chinese economy. We’ve seen the country hit by concerns of credit overexpansion, as well as negative manufacturing data and declining exports. On top of macro issues, companies that usually prosper in China like Nike (click ticker for report: ) and Yum! Brands (click ticker for report: ) posted weak results. However, after bottoming out at 47.7 during July, the HSBC China Manufacturing PMI compiled by Markit turned modestly positive at 50.1 during the month of August (anything above 50 represents expansion). Industry destocking appears to be mostly completed, and manufacturers are receiving more new orders. Strength in Footwear Persists

Shoe retailers DSW (click ticker for report: ) and Brown Shoe Company (BWS) posted better-than-expected second-quarter results. DSW On Tuesday, DSW’s second-quarter release revealed that its sales surged 9.7% year-over-year to $562 million, easily exceeding consensus expectations. Earnings per share adjusted for luxury testing and the termination of Retail Venture Inc’s pension plan increased 47% year-over-year, to $0.97. Foot Locker’s Revenue Growth Slows; Will Hicks Leave?

Athletic footwear retailer Foot Locker (click ticker for report: ) posted second quarter results Friday that were largely in-line with expectations. Revenue increased 6.4% year-over-year to $1.5 billion, in-line with consensus estimates. Earnings per share excluding the integration of Runners Point Group increased 21% year-over-year to $0.46, a penny below consensus expectations but not much of a disappointment. Mixed Second Quarter Results Across Retail

Tuesday morning, a variety of retailers reported calendar second quarter results that were decidedly mixed. Let’s take a deeper look. TJX Companies TJX Companies (click ticker for report: ) posted second quarter results marked by top and bottom line expansion. Revenue increased 8% year-over-year to $6.4 billion with same-store sales growth of 4% while earnings per share improved 18% year-over-year to $0.66 per share. Both metrics exceeded consensus expectations. Year-to-date, the firm has generated free cash flow of $314 million, equal to 2% of total revenue. Though the company has 3,119 locations worldwide, the company continues to experience stable comparable same-store sales (“comp”) growth.
