Weak Holiday Sales from Hasbro Are a Surprise

After NPD reported solid toy sales during December, we thought the holiday season might be relatively strong for the major toymakers—including Lego, Hasbro (click ticker for report: ), and Mattel (click ticker for report: ). However, Hasbro announced last week that its fourth quarter revenue will be approximately $1.3 billion, below the consensus expectation of $1.4 billion. Earnings, net of restructuring charges, will be $2.73-$2.75 per share, well below the consensus estimate of $2.85 per share. We won’t know until the firm announces its results in February what caused the weakness, but we like the firm’s decision to reduce annual operating expenses by $100 million over the next three years. Since December seemed like a relatively strong month for the … Read more

Strong Holiday Sales Boost Toy Makers

Between the rise of video games and the popularity of cell phones and tablets among children, one might expect the US toy industry to be experiencing a robust decline. However, according to NPD, holiday sales were strong enough to propel the toy market to $16.5 billion in sales during 2012, down just $100 million compared to 2011. The report claims dollar sales and unit sales surged 18% and 10%, respectively, during the final two weeks of December, driving sales 1.3% higher year-over-year for the busiest month of the year. Leapfrog (LF), which focuses primarily on educational toys, topped the ‘best-selling toy list’ with 4 out of the 10 best sellers as well as 3 out of the top 4 (including the … Read more

A Dual Focus on Valuation and Yield Is the Best Way to Combat Changes in Future Dividend Tax Rates

With a potential hike in the dividend tax rate just around the corner, there is no more important time than now for income investors to evaluate their existing portfolio holdings to determine whether they are well-positioned for a higher-tax environment. Assuming there are no changes to the current trajectory, the top dividend tax rate is expected to rise to 39.6% next year (up from 15% currently), and the highest-income earners will see a Medicare surtax on top of that. Evaluate All Aspects of a Dividend Investment First of all, we think those investing in high-yielders (firms) at any price (HYAAP) may be most affected by this change in tax rates. These high-yielders at any price (HYAAP) tend to be favorites of those at or near retirement, particularly given the paltry payouts on fixed … Read more

Hasbro Reports a Strong Third Quarter

Toymaker and dividend-growth gem Hasbro (click ticker for report: ) reported better than expected earnings and revenue that was in-line with consensus estimates Monday morning. The firm saw revenue remain roughly flat at $1.35 billion but grow 1%, if adjusted for negative currency impacts. Earnings per share fell 2% to $1.24. We thought results might be a little stronger than reported after Mattel’s (click ticker for report: ) strong earnings, but we still think the quarter was solid. Revenue in the US grew only 1% to $774.5 million, but operating profits surged 20% year-over-year to $154.2 million. The firm’s focus has clearly yielded positive results. Net of currency impacts, international toy revenues were up 1% as well, though down 7% … Read more
