The Chinese Market Is Rigged

The Chinese equity markets do not reflect reality. The government has made it so. Trading on hundreds of  Chinese-listed stocks has been halted or suspended during the past few weeks, short selling (or even selling by large shareholders) has been banned, and as much as 10% of GDP has been pledged to prop up Chinese shares, and the list of government intervention goes on and on. The Chinese equity markets are “rigged,” and the government holds all the cards. Even so, share prices won’t stop falling. There may be nothing left to stop them. The writing has been on the wall for years that a bubble had been forming in China. As when everyone was on margin and “playing” the … Read more

Alibaba Shares Disappoint

No need for boo-hooing BABA just yet. We’re aware of the poor performance of Alibaba’s shares, and we’re as disappointed as any. But we haven’t gone sour on the firm.  Chinese stocks (FXI) recently entered a bear market as the Shanghai Composite Index has dropped over 20% from its June 12 peak. The market is now in the midst of what most call a “self-correction,” as Chinese equity valuations have become out of touch with underlying fundamentals, though we maintain our view that both Alibaba and Baidu (BIDU) remain significantly undervalued. The People’s Bank of China, in an attempt to halt the recent slide in share prices, cut both its one-year lending and deposit rates by 0.25%. In addition, the … Read more

Is Apple Worth More Than $200 Per Share?

Possibly. But we do think Apple’s stock is cheap. $727 billion. $727,000,000,000. That’s Apple’s (AAPL) market capitalization as of the close of business February 11. It’s hard to put such a huge number into perspective, but it amounts to roughly the market caps of the next two largest companies on the US market, Exxon Mobil (XOM) and Microsoft (MSFT), combined. From our perspective, Apple is finally getting credit for its sprawling and near-impenetrable ecosystem and dominance in converging technologies from the iPhone to the iPad to wearable devices. In his latest open letter that’s making headlines, Carl Icahn upped his fair value estimate of Apple to $216 from $203 due in part to higher-than-previously-forecast earnings estimates for the current fiscal … Read more

DCF valuation captures the expectations of a firm’s competitive advantages, growth prospects, strategic endeavors, and any other qualitative factor. No other process does this. Yikes! Investor Expectations

A few days ago, I received an email from a valued member of ours. He said that our call on Ford (F) was wrong because we removed shares from the Best Ideas portfolio too early. Another member mentioned a couple months ago that we removed Baidu (BIDU) from the Best Ideas portfolio too early, and he was extremely disappointed for this reason. One of our most valued financial advisor clients, whom said that our call on a certain industry had saved him millions in client assets, decided to cancel his subscription due to a structural shift in his business to ETFs. The puzzling part of all of this, however, is that our call on Ford reaped a ~35% gain, the … Read more

Apple Hacked! Not Alone.

By Brian Nelson, CFA It’s difficult to be a business these days. Not only do you have to provide a service that customers are willing to pay for, but your customers have to have the means to pay for it. But more and more, we are seeing that businesses have more obstacles to overcome, and I’m not just talking about increased regulations. I’m talking about hackers, and their work is becoming more and more prevalent. Target (TGT) continues to be distracted from its credit data breach, while eBay (EBAY) recently reported a cyber attack, though of the less-serious variety. This week, reports indicate that Home Depot (HD) has been the target of a massive credit card data breach. Though admitting … Read more

Baidu Continues to Impress

For the sake of not repeating the investment thesis on Baidu (BIDU) in this article, we’ve provided the link to ‘Baidu’s Internet Presence in China Is Phenomenal’ for background. Also, please don’t forget to access the company’s 16-page report, if desired. On Thursday, the Chinese Internet search giant reported excellent second-quarter results. Total revenue surged an impressive 58.5% from the same period a year ago, while operating profit advanced 22.5%. Baidu has a clear lead in mobile in China, with mobile revenue now as much as 30% of total revenue. Net income attributable to Baidu leapt more than 34%, to $571.7 million. The growth rates were fantastic, and we think Baidu is now trading more consistently with its blockbuster performance … Read more
