Alerts: High-grading! GILD–>JNJ; EBAY–>FB

Pictured: The long-term view of Gilead’s Harvoni franchise has blurred. Prices updated, as of 1:36pmCT. By Brian Nelson, CFA We were very pleased by the market action of Friday, January 29, with the top weightings in each of the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio and Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio performing extremely well. Visa (V), the largest weighting in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio (7%+), is simply “on fire,” with the company trading ~5% higher on the session at the time of this writing. The high end of our fair value range of $90 per share for shares is starting to look within reach for the credit-card network, “.” Visa generates an operating margin in the mid-60% range (not a typo), and there … Read more

What’s Working in Today’s Market?

By Brian Nelson, CFA As emerging markets around the world suffer from commodity-price-led economic weakness, capital continues to find a safe-haven in US government bonds (TLT, TBT), but for those equity-oriented funds that mandate a fully-invested status, not something we’re particularly advocates of, assets within US equities have favored “lower-beta” utilities (XLU) and consumer staples (XLP) sectors while cyclically-dependent and credit-levered sectors such as the financials (XLF) and materials (XLB) have suffered thus far in 2016. The industrials (XLI) and energy (XLE) sectors have also encountered higher-than-normal selling pressure in the first few weeks of the New Year, as investors evaluate the global economic landscape and what a prolonged period of low energy prices may mean for the lowest quality … Read more

Around the Horn in Biotech/Pharma: 3Q Earnings Review

The biotech (IBB) and pharma (XLV) industries have been two of the strongest-performing segments of the market since the March 2009 panic bottom during the Financial Crisis, but the broader healthcare arena has been under siege as of late. New discoveries underscored by the development of a cure for hepatitis C with Gilead’s (GILD) Solvadi/Harvoni and a huge step forward in cystic fibrosis treatment with Vertex’s (VRTX) Orkambi have helped fuel the exuberance, but established pharma entities have also caught a bid as they successfully worked through the “patent cliff,” capturing the wave of dividend growth investors and acquiring budding new pipelines from smaller rivals along the way. The past few months haven’t been kind to biotech investors, however. What … Read more

Batten Down the Hatches – Another US Market Crash Probable

A global financial contagion like that of the Financial Crisis just six short years ago cannot be ruled out. The magnitude of wealth lost in China’s (FXI) equity market is simply staggering, and we’re already witnessing bad loans soar across China’s Big 4 banks. We’re hearing that property, used as collateral for stock margin trading in China, is often being sold for 90 cents on the dollar as speculators look to cover losses. We expect the fallout from the collapse in Chinese equity markets to eventually reverberate through their property markets, impacting loan-to-values in the commercial and residential arenas, sparking significant loss rates and asset write-downs across the Chinese financial system. We continue to assess the tangible evidence of an … Read more

Big Pharma Earnings Continued…

Amgen (AMGN) Amgen’s second-quarter results, released July 30, were a sight to see. Total revenue advanced 4% versus the second quarter of last year thanks to strength in Enbrel (etanercept), Prolia (denosumab), Sensipar (cinacalcet), Kyprolis (carfilzomib) and XGEVA (denosumab). Adjusted operating income and adjusted earnings per share leapt 10% and 8% in the quarter thanks in part to the strong top-line performance but also solid adjusted operating margin improvement (~+2 percentage points). Free cash flow generation was also fantastic, with the firm hauling in $2.7 billion in the measure compared to $2.1 billion in the second quarter of 2014. Keys to the Quarter: Investors should keep an eye on its blockbuster Neulasta/NEUPOGEN performance, which faced sales pressure in the quarter, … Read more

Guide to Second Quarter Earnings; Big Pharma Experiencing Earnings Momentum

Abbott (ABT) Abbott is one of our favorites in Big Pharma. We know many of you hold the stock in your own portfolios, and frankly, the company is one of the best operators in its industry. Abbott’s second-quarter performance revealed continued strength in its global diagnostics and branded generics businesses. Foreign currency exchange headwinds have posed problems for almost every multi-national in our coverage, but on an operational basis, second-quarter worldwide sales leapt nearly 10%. Abbott kept its full-year 2015 adjusted EPS guidance range from continuing operations unchanged at $2.10-$2.20, a rarity across a pharma universe that’s experiencing fantastic earnings momentum as of late. Keys to the Quarter: We were very pleased with the traction witnessed in Abbott’s pediatric nutrition … Read more

I Need a CFA® Charter Holder in My Practice – Financial Advisor

Financial advisors and individual investors are always looking for the best. I had a conversation with one of our most valued clients this week. I’ve withheld his name and firm for the sake of privacy. We talked extensively about the significant back-testing he performed in constructing a portfolio that was optimized for a number of dynamics. The portfolio he created performed significantly better than the broad market benchmark during the past decade, but most importantly, its maximum drawdown at the depths of the Great Recession was a mirror fraction of that of the S&P 500 (SPY), and the length to recovery was materially shorter than it took the broader market to get back on its feet. I was impressed with … Read more

Hooray! Biogen’s Breakthrough Alzheimer’s Drug?

We’re disappointed that we missed highlighting Biogen (BIIB) to our membership many moons ago. Biogen’s stock has more than quadrupled since we launched coverage of the company in late 2011, and frankly, its stock has done nothing but rocket higher. To be fair, Biogen is a top-10 holding in the Health Care Select Sector SPDR (XLV), a position in the Best Ideas portfolio, so we do have some exposure to the blossoming biotech, but we could have done a better job pounding the table. The once- 9-rated on the Valuentum Buying Index, Health Care Select Sector SPDR has approximately doubled since it was added to the Best Ideas portfolio, but we know that may not be good enough. The news … Read more
