The Walking Dead?

At 453.6 million barrels, U.S. crude oil inventories remain near levels not seen for this time of year in at least the last 80 years. – Summary of Weekly Petroleum Data for the Week Ending August 7, 2015 The oil & gas energy complex is nearing a state of panic, if it isn’t already in one. We’ve been talking about the glut of energy resource supply for many months now, and our impeccable positioning in the newsletter portfolios long before the collapse in prices is well known. Kinder Morgan (KMI) had been a relative outperformer in the Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio until we removed it at $40 per share a couple of months ago. The same had been true with … Read more

The Game Is Nearing an End for MLPs…

The game is nearing an end for master limited partnerships (MLPs) in this energy cycle, in our view. We no longer feel comfortable, if we ever did, including any MLP in the Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio. Linn Energy (LINE, LNCO), of the upstream variety, may have taken on far too much debt as an E&P entity, but its free-cash-flow management during the first half of 2015 has actually been decent…stronger than better-known upstream and midstream operators. Yet, despite Linn’s positive free-cash-flow execution, even after distribution payments, the entity’s bankers appear to be circling like sharks, ready to take a further bite out of its borrowing capacity (due to lower energy resource pricing). Fairly, the company simply can’t afford to take … Read more

Friday Evening News

Square to Go Public According to Forbes, San Francisco based mobile payment company, Square, is expected to go public sometime in 2015. In fact, sources close to the situation report that the firm is expected to file a confidential registration statement very soon, if it hasn’t happened already. Under the JOBS Act, emerging, growing companies can file for an IPO confidentially if they meet certain requirements, including having less than $1 billion in annual revenue. Internal debate over the ideal time for the firm’s IPO has clouded the situation, as has the appointment of co-founder and CEO Jack Dorsey as Twitter’s (TWTR) interim CEO. Also this week, Square launched a new credit card and phone reader designed to allow businesses … Read more

No Fly Zone: Airlines’ Economic Profitability Still Unproven

Image Source: Amy McTigue We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: the airline industry is not well-suited for long-term investors. The industry that we’re talking about is the airline industry and includes companies such as United Continental (UAL) and JetBlue (JBLU), not the aerospace industry and its constituents such as Boeing (BA) and Precision Castparts (PCP), which are involved in aircraft-making and have fantastic business models. More on commercial aerospace here >> Today, we’re reiterating our view that most airline stocks should be viewed as nothing more than boom-or-bust, speculative vehicles. Perhaps the biggest issue with airlines is that the factors that drive their revenue and costs are largely out of their control. In other words, an airline … Read more

Chevron: Cash Flow and Dividends Are Inextricably Linked

We think it’s worth reviewing case studies at times to help members build a greater understanding of and an increased conviction in the products, tools, and proprietary analysis we make available to them. In the case of Chevron (CVX), the efficacy of the Dividend Cushion ratio in helping to predict a company’s future dividend policy was undeniable. The Dividend Cushion ratio is calculated for every non-financial operating company in our coverage universe and can be found in the data strip at the top of each firm’s Dividend Report. A ratio above 1.25 is generally viewed as GOOD. For new members, Chevron had been a holding in the Dividend Growth portfolio since its inception. However, the company was removed from the … Read more

The Market Top?

For those that are following along closely, you shouldn’t be surprised if the market corrects 5%-10% in the coming months. Let’s talk about this. From a technical standpoint, it may not be too far of stretch to say that we’re likely going to test the bottom of the S&P 500 (SPY) uptrend, and that could feasibly mean a drop to the 200-day moving average (blue line above). My technical alerts are telling me that with respect to the S&P 500, we’ve just dipped below the 50-day moving average, an arbitrary simple rolling average but one that is no less self-fulfilling than value investing itself. Don’t panic though. We’ve cut through the 50-day moving average many a time before during this … Read more

Dividend Growth Portfolio Transaction Alert

As previously outlined, we are adding a 3% position in the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE) in the Dividend Growth portfolio to replace the recently-removed position in Chevron (CVX). The 20-page ETF report on the XLE and its peers can be downloaded . In the report, we outline our thoughts on the outlook for crude oil and natural gas prices and explain why the XLE tops our list of energy sector ETF ideas. As it relates to Chevron, we very much like the oil and gas giant, but we think the XLE will still position us to capture a potential recovery in crude oil prices but without exposing us to the individual capital budget decisions of any one major … Read more

Transaction Alert: Saying Goodbye to Chevron…For Now

The bottom continues to fall out of crude oil prices. The price of West Texas crude oil hit six-year lows during the trading session Monday dipping just below $43 per barrel. The world is drowning in a crude oil, and OPEC continues to produce to drive marginal US operators to the brink. The dollar is strengthening, which is exacerbating the decline in the price of this dollar-denominated commodity. The news is not “new.” We’ve been commenting on the fall of crude oil for months, and the lack of energy positions in the newsletter portfolios coupled with the bearish calls on the offshore drillers speak to how far ahead of the market we positioned readers. Remember Seadrill (SDRL)? It’s trading at … Read more

When “Bad” News Is “Good” News…Take A Euro Trip?

Pack the bags, kiss the grandkids, it’s time to do some traveling!!! Maybe to Europe? From a global perspective, for those whose wealth and income is generated in US dollars, you can arguably buy more with one US dollar today than at any other time in the past 12 years, according to a popular index that measures the value of the dollar versus a basket of other currencies. Expectations are being ratcheted up for impending interest rate hikes by the Fed, and this means that assets are flying into US greenbacks from all over the world. The dollar is strengthening against the euro, the pound, the loonie, the aussie, the rand, and the list goes on and on. This decade … Read more

When the Facts Change

The most valuable quality of any portfolio manager is the ability to change his or her mind, and not look back. When the facts change, so should the thesis. And the facts have changed with Dividend Growth portfolio holding Chevron (CVX). A look at the oil giant’s fourth-quarter results revealed a balance sheet that we flat-out were hoping to avoid, particularly for a commodity-producing entity. What was once a healthy net cash position just a few quarters ago has now ballooned into a $15 billion net debt position and a $27 billion total debt position overall. The pace of change has been incredible, and Chevron continues add more leverage as we write. Just last week, it sold another $6 billion … Read more
