Understanding the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Designation

“Among the countless finance degrees around the world, the Chartered Financial Analyst qualification has become the gold standard.” – Financial Times, 13 August 2010 “[The] qualification is roughly equivalent to a specialized postgraduate finance degree, including a mixture of economics, ethics, law, and accountancy… Whereas there are tens of thousands of finance degrees available around the world, ranging from the excellent to the worthless, there is only one CFA, managed and examined by an American association of financial professionals, the CFA Institute.” – the Economist From the CFA Institute: “The Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charter is an investment credential that, for more than 60 years, has been the global standard for embodying the integrity, dedication, and advanced skills needed to … Read more

Apple V. Samsung

Image Source: Lr43_L1000009 By Kris Rosemann Samsung’s (SSNLF) issues with its Galaxy Note 7 smartphone began in late August when the firm postponed shipments of the smartphone due to product quality testing. The event was not a major issue, as early demand for the device had outpaced supply, already causing shipment delays to some markets. Shortly after the delay was announced, claims of the smartphones’ batteries exploding surfaced, and Samsung subsequently announced it would recall Galaxy Note 7s across the globe. The recall announcement only began the saga of despair for the Galaxy Note 7 series. One week later, the FAA issued a warning that the devices could be an airborne fire hazard and suggested consumers refrain from using the smartphones … Read more

Yahoo! Should Still Buy eBay’s “Free Cash Flow”

Image Source: eBay According to the latest from CNBC, there are five bidders left for Yahoo’s (YHOO) core business, and it’s very likely the company will make the sale to one of them soon. Many are saying that Verizon (VZ) is the front-runner, but we can’t rule out the buying power of the group led by Quicken Loans’ Dan Gilbert, who has the backing of the Oracle of Omaha himself, Warren Buffett, or a high-ball bid from private equity, perhaps TPG Capital. AT&T (T), Time (TIME), and other private equity giants KKR and Bain Capital might still be in the game as well. We think breaking apart Yahoo! or selling it outright, instead of merging it with eBay (EBAY) isn’t … Read more

Part III: Nelson’s Evaluation of Berkshire’s 2015 Annual Report

<< Go back to Part I << Go back to Part II By Brian Nelson, CFA It’s always a wonder to open up on the Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A, BRK.B) annual report for a large variety of different reasons, but every time I do I can’t help but ponder yesteryear through the table on page 2, “Berkshire’s Performance vs. the S&P 500.” I think I have a unique knack for imagining what might have been if today’s standards would have been applied to Berkshire in the 1970s, perhaps in some ways how many baseball fans may think about whether the legends of the past would have put up the type of numbers that they did if presented with today’s dynamics. For … Read more

Mr. Buffett: Apple and the Potential Yahoo-eBay Tie-Up

Image Source: Fortune Live Media Stocks will be volatile. Remember – they are driven by people, and people act emotionally, irrationally at times. This dynamic has hammered Apple (AAPL) as of late. Though we’ve engaged in risk mitigation in recent months in trimming our position in Apple in both newsletter portfolios, “Valuentum’s Exclusive Weekly Recap (August 2015),” we’ve done all that we can to explain to our membership the tremendous valuation opportunity presented by shares, “Quantifying Apple’s Tremendous Investment Case (September 2015), while acknowledging that market “spirits” could pressure the company in the near term, “Apple Will Go Lower… (January 2016).” The transparency of our writing is enough to make our reader’s heads spin sometimes, perhaps to make them think … Read more

Cord Cutting and the New Age Consumer

Image Source: Mike Mozart Disney’s Quarterly Performance Reignites Fear On May 10, Disney’s (DIS) shares fell after the company reported lower-than-expected fiscal second-quarter earnings. Investors are concerned with the media and entertainment giant’s weakness in advertising revenue and subscribers in its Media Networks segment, which accounts for more than 60% of the company’s operating income. Was the fiscal second quarter the beginning of a long-term trend for the segment at Disney? As more and more consumers continue to opt away from traditional cable TV, will not only its subscriptions decline, but will demand for advertising space on the networks also fall as fewer consumers are reached through the medium? Investors are fearing the worst. The development is certainly worth following … Read more

You Can Change Your Mind!

By Brian Nelson, CFA It looks like the energy master limited partnership (AMLP, AMZ) space has been catching a bid the past few days. It’s so important, however, to keep things in perspective, and the best way to do so is to look at an intermediate-term chart of the group, which remains under considerable stress, “Bye Bye Energy MLPs, Part II (Jan 2016)” The market wants some of the most beaten down equities to rally, including Energy Transfer Equity (ETE) and Energy Transfer Partners (ETP), which have fallen devastatingly from their respective peaks of $35 and near-$70 per share, respectively. If you’re not looking at charts, you’re leaving a lot of free information on the table. Energy master limited partnerships, … Read more

Beginning of BlackBerry Turnaround?

Last January, we were puzzled by the situation surrounding BlackBerry (BBRY), and judging by the volatility in shares, many other investors were as well. The firm denied rumors that it would be purchased for a substantial premium by competitor Samsung (SSNLF) in hopes to continue its efforts to create a larger, more diverse portfolio to compete with Apple (AAPL); BlackBerry continues to bet on its ability to use its own patent portfolio to facilitate a turnaround, even if tying the knot may still be the easy way out. In any case, the possibility that such a turnaround has finally begun has increased…maybe. In early November, BlackBerry completed the acquisition of secure mobile communications leader Good Technology for $425 million in … Read more

Verizon Warns, AT&T and Sprint Sell Off

The telecom services industry is in a pricing war, and we want no part of it. From outlining how AT&T’s (T) best dividend growth years are behind it (see its dividend report ) and revealing Verizon’s (VZ) potentially prohibitive debt load (see here) to Sprint’s (S) cutthroat pricing behavior and T-Mobile’s (TMUS) aggressive marketing, we’ve been pounding the table on how the telecom services industry is a mess right now. Verizon announced in a warning December 8 that the operating environment is not getting any better, and in our view, it may not for some time: As (Verizon) is accelerating the upgrades of high-quality customers to 4G, total retail postpaid disconnects are trending higher both sequentially and year over year … Read more
