MLP Debate: Not Over?

I’d like to apologize in advance, but we have to cover some well-traveled ground…again. We know many of you joined “midstream” our call on Kinder Morgan and the MLP space, perhaps in January or February 2016, and some may not have the entire story arc. This article really may be the difference between a life-long customer and someone that cancels today. By Brian Nelson, CFA In June 2015, Valuentum issued a report “5 Reasons Why We Expect Kinder Morgan’s (KMI) Shares to Collapse,” a piece that included our warning about the impending collapse in shares of Kinder Morgan and our major concerns across the MLP spectrum due to their insufficient free cash flow relative to distributions paid in light of … Read more

Distributing Truth on MLPs

By Kris Rosemann The recent merger break-up fiasco at Energy Transfer Equity (ETE) and Williams Companies (WMB) has put the master limited partnership (MLP) conversation back into the spotlight, after the two entities were unable to finalize a merger that had been announced in fall 2015 and would have created the largest pipeline company in the US. The deal between Energy Transfer Equity and Williams was officially terminated by Energy Transfer Equity June 29 after a court ruled that the firm was legally able to walk away from the agreement when it was unable to deliver an opinion on the tax treatment of the transaction that was required by June 28. Williams has since stated that it will seek monetary … Read more

Part III: Nelson’s Evaluation of Berkshire’s 2015 Annual Report

<< Go back to Part I << Go back to Part II By Brian Nelson, CFA It’s always a wonder to open up on the Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A, BRK.B) annual report for a large variety of different reasons, but every time I do I can’t help but ponder yesteryear through the table on page 2, “Berkshire’s Performance vs. the S&P 500.” I think I have a unique knack for imagining what might have been if today’s standards would have been applied to Berkshire in the 1970s, perhaps in some ways how many baseball fans may think about whether the legends of the past would have put up the type of numbers that they did if presented with today’s dynamics. For … Read more

Mr. Buffett: Apple and the Potential Yahoo-eBay Tie-Up

Image Source: Fortune Live Media Stocks will be volatile. Remember – they are driven by people, and people act emotionally, irrationally at times. This dynamic has hammered Apple (AAPL) as of late. Though we’ve engaged in risk mitigation in recent months in trimming our position in Apple in both newsletter portfolios, “Valuentum’s Exclusive Weekly Recap (August 2015),” we’ve done all that we can to explain to our membership the tremendous valuation opportunity presented by shares, “Quantifying Apple’s Tremendous Investment Case (September 2015), while acknowledging that market “spirits” could pressure the company in the near term, “Apple Will Go Lower… (January 2016).” The transparency of our writing is enough to make our reader’s heads spin sometimes, perhaps to make them think … Read more

Valuentum Applauds SEC’s Move To Evaluate Non-GAAP Reporting

Image Source: SEC By Brian Nelson, CFA Too many investors have been hurt. Management teams want to present their results the best way they can within the boundaries of the law, to bolster their holdings. Some analysts want to “pitch” their stocks in the most optimistic light possible, to preserve their jobs. The consumers of such research want the future to always be bright, so they want to believe the “good news.” The result: there are now very few places to find objective, unbiased research and analysis. It therefore has become more important for companies to provide the most accurate and helpful information possible, and non-GAAP earnings presentation isn’t it — in fact, it has gotten way out of whack. … Read more

It’s Kinder Morgan’s Fundamentals

Image Source: Kurtis Garbutt By Brian Nelson, CFA Skeptics: Kinder Morgan’s (KMI) fundamentals are the reason why the stock has cratered from $45 per share to under $20. Many investors that failed to pay attention to the financials continue to be in disbelief, looking for a scapegoat for their miscue. There’s never a good reason to be stubborn when it comes to investing. The very best quality any analyst can have is the ability to change one’s mind. I’ve taught this religiously for years, but why do many even seasoned investors have a difficult time admitting that they’ve been wrong? It’s only human nature. Let me explain what’s going on with Kinder Morgan. We first have to start with what … Read more

ETE Down 70%; IBM Poor Quality, Netflix Begins to Implode

Shown above: Energy Transfer Equity’s recent share price performance. A lot of investors depend on us for our energy research. We’ve been busy publishing on the website, and we can’t possibly send out all of our research via email, so please come visit. Many are aware of our take in any case: the energy master limited partnership (AMLP, AMZ) isn’t going away tomorrow, but it may not last over the long haul. This is nothing new. We’ve been saying this since the peak in energy MLP share prices, which just so happened to coincide with Energy Transfer Equity’s (ETE) heights in the mid-$30s. Our readers understand that we’re taking the long view with MLPs when we talk about business models … Read more

The Corporate Buyback Conundrum

The above is a trailing 15-month chart of the broad market index, the S&P 500 (SPY). As you can see, the markets have gone nowhere fast. The fallout in the energy complex coupled with emerging market uncertainty and political unrest in the US is making for quite the choppy market environment. Interestingly, however, since the middle of last year, the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio has quietly been distancing itself from this broad market benchmark, as strong performance from constituents coupled with a larger cash position in a generally weaker market have paid off. Where indexers focus on controlling costs instead of focusing on generating strong returns with relatively low turnover (and commission and tax implications), the strategy powering the Best … Read more

Valuentum: Still Bullish on Kinder Morgan Since Mid-Teens

“Valuentum called the collapse in Kinder Morgan’s shares from $40 per share to the low-teens, and now we have called the rebound to $20 from the low-teens. Though this action may not fit into the playbook of the “buy and hold” investor, the idea of “selling” overpriced stocks that are going down and “buying” overpriced stocks that are going up is a core part of our methodology.” By Brian Nelson, CFA I’m still getting emails about how wrong we were about our calls on Kinder Morgan (KMI). Will they ever stop? We’re doing our best to relieve investors of the shackles of “buy and hold” thinking, which is separate, distinct and runs counter to investing with a focus on long-term … Read more

Avoid Dividend Double Whammies By Using the Dividend Cushion!

By Brian Nelson, CFA I think a lot of investors sell themselves short. Of course you want a strong and growing dividend, but analysis shouldn’t stop there. One of the most important things you could ever do is evaluate just how strong that dividend truly is via the Dividend Cushion ratio, a metric that measures a company’s dividend coverage via future free cash flow generation with consideration of its balance sheet health. For example, how valuable would it have been to know that Kinder Morgan (KMI), ConocoPhillips (COP), and BHP Billiton (BHP) were going to cut their dividends…in advance of them doing so? Our membership knew these cuts were probable long before anyone else because they paid attention to each … Read more
