We Take a Deep Dive into the Future Prospects of Best Idea Google

Before the meteoric rise in the price of Apple (click ticker for report: ), Google (click ticker for report: ) stole most of the tech-stock headlines and, according to some, was pretty much a sure bet to become a $1,000 stock. However, looking under the hood, the company has had some turmoil during the past few years. In addition to bringing back founder Sergey Brin as the CEO, the company has created the world’s most successful mobile operating system to date (Android), a social network with over 100 million users, and failed to purchase Groupon (click ticker for report: ), which at the present seems like it was a blessing. Additionally, the company is working on cars that drive themselves, shuttered Google Wave … Read more

Solid Cyber Monday

According to IBM Digital Analytics, Cyber Monday sales surged 26.6% year-over-year and are expected to total $1.5 billion. These results were consistent with our previous belief that the online channel would continue to become a more important retail destination, though we’re a bit surprised that growth was so strong on one day (since we’ve seen retailers run a variety of sales all week long). Two of the big winners yesterday appear to be Amazon (click ticker for report: ) and eBay (click ticker for report: ), where sales volumes increased 52% and 57%, respectively. Sources cite the percentage of retailers participating in Cyber Monday sales at 97%, or almost every company that sells products on the Internet. It’s not easy to … Read more

New York Times Experiences Advertising Weakness in Third Quarter

On Thursday, the New York Times (click ticker for report: ) reported terrible third-quarter results that showed weakness in both print and digital advertising revenue. New York Times’ total revenue fell 0.6% as advertising revenue dropped nearly 9% during the period. The lower revenue was compounded by a 2.3% increase in operating costs during the period, as operating profit tumbled nearly 60% to $8.5 million from $21 million in the year-ago quarter. Print and digital advertising sales fell 10.9% and 2.2%, respectively, during the quarter and overwhelmed the 7.4% increase in circulation revenue. We’ve seen advertising weakness from other online-based consumer subscription firms such as Morningstar (click ticker for report: ), and we credit this trend to the growing digital … Read more

Investors Can Dislike Facebook But Third Quarter Results Were Strong

Social networking kingpin Facebook (click ticker for report: ) reported strong third quarter results Tuesday afternoon as the company navigates the shift towards mobile computing. Revenue surged 32% year-over-year to $1.2 billion, while earnings were flat at $0.12 per share as operating margins fell. However, both numbers exceeded consensus estimates and were surprisingly strong given the weakness we saw last week from Google (click ticker for report: ). Facebook continues to win eyeballs as usage and users continue to surge. Monthly active users increased 26% year-over-year to 1.01 billion, daily active users grew 28% year-over-year to 584 million, and mobile active users grew 61% year-over-year to 604 million. Facebook remains the number one application for both Android and iOS. Despite … Read more

Yahoo Beats Estimates; We Like Mayer’s Strategy

Web content firm Yahoo (click ticker for report: ) reported better than expected third quarter results Monday afternoon. Revenue grew 2% year-over-year to $1.09 billion, a touch better than consensus estimates. Operating income per share, which excludes the gain on sale of Alibaba, grew 66% year-over-year to $0.35, which was much better than the consensus expectation. Most of Yahoo’s profitability gains came from shrinking the workforce, which fell by 1,700 employees on a year-over-year basis, to 12,000. Sales and marketing expenses were cut 7% year-over-year to $269 million, while product development costs fell 5%. This focus on cost cutting allowed the company to generate adjusted operating cash flow of $496 million, up 39% compared to the third quarter of 2011. … Read more

A Follow Up on Google’s Third Quarter Results

Please click here to read our initial thoughts on Google’s premature quarterly release. In spite of a hoarse voice, CEO Larry Page sounded excited about several initiatives going forward, including expanding mobile ad spend by advertisers. The firm continues to make incremental improvements to search, which may save market share, but the changes haven’t been able to slow the shift to mobile search. Google continues to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on research & development on projects like Google Fiber and self-driving cars which may drive growth in the future, but has weighed on near-term profitability. CEO Larry Page hit on some other positive notes, like YouTube’s increase in ad effectiveness relative to traditional TV, as well as the … Read more

Google Accidentally Reports Weaker Than Anticipated Third Quarter Earnings

Tech giant Google (click ticker for report: GOOG) accidentally reported weaker than expected third quarter earnings today. Printing firm RR Donnelly (click ticker for report: RRD) mistakenly filed Google’s third quarter earnings just after noon eastern time, leading to some erratic trading in shares of the search giant. Regardless, the report revealed that revenue surged 45% year-over-year to $14.1 billion, boosted by the firm’s acquisition of Motorola Mobility (a bit lighter than anticipated). Earnings per share fell 7% year-over-year to $9.03, much worse than consensus expectations. Paid clicks surged 33% year-over-year and 6% sequentially, driven by increasing mobile ad share, in our view. However, cost-per-click fell significantly, down 15% year-over-year, while traffic acquisition costs grew to 26% of revenue from … Read more

Xbox Music Is a Nice Addition to the Surface Product Suite

Early Monday, Microsoft (click ticker for report: ) announced that it will add Xbox Music as a preloaded device to its Surface tablets. Much like Spotify, the service will allow users to compile their own on-demand music and playlists, but it will also be able to be used for downloading individual songs onto a cloud storage system. Though the new software will also be available on iOS (click ticker for report: ) and Android (click ticker for report: ) within the year, the service is a clear attempt to boost the attractiveness of the Surface tablet. The service will have the same selection of songs as the recently discontinued Zune Pass, and it revives the firm’s presence in music. It’s … Read more

Why We Continue to Like Apple and Microsoft

In yet another negative blow to the PC market, Gartner reports that PC shipments fell 13.8% year-over-year during the third quarter. The big losers, yet again, were the PC giants Dell (click ticker for report: ), HP (click ticker for report: ), and Toshiba. Of course, the shocking loser was Apple (click ticker for report: ), which saw shipments fall 6% (considerably lower than the 25%+ drops of competitors), though market share increased 110 basis points to 13.6%. With the entire industry slumping, who’s to blame? Not surprisingly, we’re labeling Apple as the major disrupter in the PC market. Since the inception of the iPhone and subsequent iPad releases, computing has shifted more and more toward mobile consumption, with the … Read more
