In the News: Sears Nears Bankruptcy, Luxury Apparel Weakens, Fastenal Reports, and Financial Tech Stocks Take Hit In what was a long-time coming, Sears looks to finally be succumbing to the pressures of the brick-and-mortar retailing business. It won’t be the last big-name retailer to fail, and it certainly wasn’t the first. Luxury stocks are reeling as a result of worries in China. Financial tech stocks gave back a fraction of their huge gains more recently, as investors size up credit risk at this stage of the economic cycle. We continue to believe financial tech is the place to be, however, with PayPal and Visa as two of our top considerations. Sep 5, 2018

There Is Milk At The Store "Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning." -- Winston Churchill Aug 6, 2018

PayPal on the Move to $125? PayPal gets the backing of a new investor, and expectations are for the equity to trade to $125 within the next 18 months. We’re not as bullish on its valuation as others might be, but we’d be really excited to see this simulated Best Ideas Newsletter idea surge! Jun 22, 2018

Internet Sales Taxes and Restructuring the U.S. Post Office The Supreme Court has been active in creating revenue opportunities for states, as in legalizing sports betting and most recently in facilitating the collection of online sales taxes. The White House has floated the idea of reorganizing the U.S. Postal Service, but we think this endeavor represents more of a tail risk for Stamps.com than anything else. Though we expect smaller online retailers to feel some pressure as a result of the online sales tax ruling (Amazon already collects online sales taxes), we don’t think the ruling, while leveling the playing field for some brick-and-mortar retailers, will change the fate of many aging department stores such as J.C. Penney and Sears, both of which may not make it to the other side of the next downturn with shareholder capital intact. May 30, 2018

Study: Valuentum's Best Ideas Newsletter Portfolio "Though we largely achieved the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio’s goals in advancing the newsletter portfolio each publication year (ends December 15) and achieving relative outperformance and risk-adjusted superiority to the benchmark, we may have done even better had our equity allocation been full during the measurement period." -- Brian Nelson, CFA May 18, 2018

PayPal Grows Stronger PayPal scooped up assets that will help it better compete against Square, and we think both entities have a bright future regardless of the increased competition. Apr 25, 2018

A Trifecta of Good Reports: Visa, Facebook, PayPal We continue to like the long-term potential at Visa and absolutely love the level of its operating margins. Facebook is going to continue to get bad press, but fundamentally, we think the company is going to make it through to shine once again. PayPal had a nice first-quarter report, and while we would like to see more security with respect to its relationship with eBay, the company’s pace of growth suggests it could easily grow out of its early ties with the auction website.
