Boeing to Acquire Spirit AeroSystems
Image: Boeing’s shares have traded sideways the past few years as it works to fix safety issues. Boeing benefits from its global oligopoly with Airbus, but the company is in a world of hurt at the moment. Looking at its first-quarter results shows a sizable core non-GAAP net loss per share, operating cash flow burn of $3.4 billion, as well as free cash flow burn of $3.9 billion. We think the near term will continue to be difficult for Boeing as it struggles to right the ship, but a more bullish take will point to its total company backlog of $539 billion, which includes 5,600+ commercial airplanes, as one reason to be optimistic. To us, however, Boeing continues to be a show-me story, and we remain on the sidelines with respect to shares. Apr 19, 2024
Dividend Increases/Decreases for the Week of April 19
Let's take a look at firms raising/lowering their dividends this week. Mar 27, 2024
Boeing Shakes Up Executive Team
Image Source: Kanesue. We like the shake-up in the executive suite at Boeing, and while there is much work to do to get Boeing back on track to improve relations with the public regarding the safety of their planes following a number of incidents the past few years, we're optimistic the changes will be a means to that end. Boeing continues to benefit from its oligopolistic position in the aircraft making industry, and its backlog of unfulfilled deliveries remains robust. We're not changing our fair value estimate of Boeing as a result of the management shakeup, but we don't have any plans of adding Boeing to any newsletter portfolio at this time either. Mar 3, 2024
Merger Mania
Image Source: Glenn Beltz. Mergers and acquisition [M&A] activity continues as the market sets new highs. Elevated borrowing costs as a result of the Fed’s aggressive rate hiking cycle in 2022 are pushing many entities to pursue all-stock transactions. Jan 8, 2024
Boeing In Negative Headlines Again; Part of 737 Max Fuselage Blows Out During Commercial Flight
Image: Boeing's shares have been quite volatile the past couple years. On January 6, Boeing received some more bad news. Part of a fuselage installed on one of its new eight-week old 737 Max 9 aircraft blew out on an Alaska Airlines flight. Boeing had been working hard to get back on track with customer perception of the safety of its 737 MAX line-up, and we view the incident as yet another hiccup in the firm’s relations with the public. Structural Changes in the Airline and Aerospace Business
Image Source: Valuentum. The future profile for air travel demand will be negatively impacted in the long run (relative to pre-COVID-19 expectations) as increased leisure travel from the wealth effect may not completely offset reduced business travel growth impaired by digital solutions permanently disrupting the way companies conduct business. As with Warren Buffett, who recently wrote down the value of metal casting jet-engine supplier Precision Castparts (one of the best aerospace suppliers in the business), we believe intrinsic values of others in the aerospace supply chain have been permanently reduced as well. We’re staying away from airlines and aerospace with the exception of Honeywell, which offers diversified industrial exposure and a “call option” on a gradual aerospace recovery to a “new normal.” Honeywell is included in the Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio and showed that it can thrive in a business environment where aerospace demand may not live up to pre-COVID-19 long-term expectations. Honeywell yields ~1.9% at the time of this writing. Mar 5, 2021
Our Thoughts on Berkshire Hathaway’s Latest Annual Report
Image Shown: Shares of Berkshire Hathaway Inc Class B stock have been on an upward climb since June 2020 with room for additional capital appreciation upside. The top end of our fair value estimate range for BRK.B sits at $275 per share. We continue to like exposure to Berkshire Class B stock in our Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio. The top end of our fair value estimate range sits at $275 per share of BRK.B, indicating the company has room for additional capital appreciation upside as of this writing even after moving higher over the past several months. Just like any investor, Mr. Buffett will not always get it right, but we appreciate his candor when he gets something wrong. Bigger picture, the outlook for the US economy appears strong as public health authorities are utilizing COVID-19 vaccine distribution efforts to help bring an end to the crisis. Mr. Buffett, in his letter, was very upbeat about the US economy. We will end with this comment from the Oracle of Omaha: “Our unwavering conclusion: Never bet against America.” Feb 2, 2021
General Electric Provides Upbeat Outlook for 2021
Image Shown: An overview of GE’s cash flow forecasts on a divisional basis for 2021. Image Source: General Electric – Fourth Quarter of 2020 IR Earnings Presentation. The ongoing coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) has weighed negatively on the industrial sector for most of 2020, before the space started to recover during the latter part of the year. On January 26, industrial conglomerate General Electric reported fourth quarter earnings for 2020 that beat consensus top-line estimates but missed consensus bottom-line estimates. The company’s business operating segments are broken down into its various GE Industrial divisions (‘Power,’ ‘Renewable Energy,’ ‘Aviation’ and ‘Healthcare’) and GE Capital. What really impressed us was that GE Industrial’s free cash flow came in at $4.4 billion in the final quarter of last year which pushed the segment’s full year free cash flow up to a positive $0.6 billion in 2020. Management cited outperformance at GE’s Healthcare division and the ongoing turnaround at its energy portfolio as being key here during GE’s latest earnings call, which offset significant weakness at its Aviation division. Lockheed Makes an Intriguing Acquisition
Image Source: Lockheed Martin Corporation – December 2020 IR Presentation covering Lockheed Martin Corporation’s pending acquisition of Aerojet Rocketdyne Holdings Inc. On December 20, Lockheed Martin Corp announced it was acquiring Aerojet Rocketdyne for $56.00 per share in cash, or $51.00 per share after taking into account a special $5.00 per share pre-closing cash dividend payment that Aerojet Rocketdyne plans to pay out. The deal has a total equity value of ~$5 billion when including the special dividend component and is expected to close in the second half of 2021. In our view, this deal is highly complementary to Lockheed Martin’s existing operations. Combining Aerojet Rocketdyne’s propulsion and power systems business segments with Lockheed Martin’s expansive aircraft, helicopter, missile, space, maritime, and weapon systems business segments should lead to sizable operational and developmental synergies. Boeing’s Financials Are Absolutely Frightening
The reality is that Boeing’s financials are still pretty scary. During the first nine months of 2020, the company burned through an incredible $15.4 billion in free cash flow, even as it cut capital spending by a few hundred million. As of the end of the third quarter of 2020, its total consolidated debt now stands at $61 billion, with total cash and marketable securities of $27.1 billion. This compares to total consolidated debt of $24.7 billion and total cash and marketable securities of $10.9 billion, as of the end of the third quarter of 2019. The grounding of the 737 MAX and the outbreak of COVID-19 have combined to be an absolute wrecking ball to Boeing’s financials, and it may take a very, very long time before things start looking better on the books. S&P, Moody’s and Fitch still give the company investment-grade credit ratings (BBB-/Baa2/BBB-), but we’re not sure the aerospace giant deserves them. Here’s what Fitch noted October 2020: “…many of the company's quantitative rating factors will be inconsistent with the 'BBB' category for three years (2019-2021) and into 2022.” It’s probably fair to say that Boeing’s debt should be rated junk, but that would cause some severe reverberations in the credit markets, in our view.
