An Important Measure of Leverage for Dividend-Growth and Income-Oriented Shareholders, One That Is Dividend-Adjusted
As more and more investors rely on company dividends for income, dividends, in our view, have become more debt-like commitments in nature, especially from the perspective of dividend-growth or income-oriented shareholders. Years ago, we rolled out a measure of financial leverage that considers both the company’s debt and the present value of its future expected cash dividend obligations, which, in the eyes of die-hard dividend-growth or income-oriented shareholders, may be implicitly assumed to be debt-like commitments in substance. We think this leverage ratio can be used in conjunction with the Dividend Cushion ratio to gain additional insight into the dividend-paying financial health of an entity.

Paper: Value and Momentum Within Stocks, Too
Abstract: This paper strives to advance the field of finance in four ways: 1) it extends the theory of the “The Arithmetic of Active Management” to the investor level; 2) it addresses certain data problems of factor-based methods, namely with respect to value and book-to-market ratios, while introducing price-to-fair-value ratios in a factor-based approach; 3) it may lay the foundation for academic literature regarding the Valuentum, the value-timing, and ultra-momentum factors; and 4) it walks through the potential relative outperformance that may be harvested at the intersection of relevant, unique and compensated factors within individual stocks.

3 Substantial Benefits of Dividend Growth Investing
Image Source: www.epictop10.com. There are three primary benefits of a well-executed dividend growth strategy, one that is carried out with prudence and care and one that pays careful attention to the intrinsic value of the stock and its critical cash-based components. Albert Einstein is reported to have called compound interest the "eighth wonder of the world," but dividend growth investing has the potential to offer long-term investors so much more! Let's explain.

Your Role as a Choice Architect
Image: Impact Hub Global Network. Richard Thaler in his groundbreaking book Nudge, co-written with Cass Sunstein, talked about the role of the choice architect. A choice architect is basically someone or some organization that has the responsibility for organizing the context and content in which people make decisions. At Valuentum, we can never provide personalized buy/sell advice, but in providing publishing services, we've opted for the healthy option for members, and that sometimes means you won't find a large selection of dessert options. This isn't a shortcoming of our service (i.e. we know desserts are tempting), but rather a key positive attribute. As we've shown time and time again, you don't need to look far to beat the market return (or, by comparison, to have a healthy diet). If something is not on the menu at Valuentum, it means the chef has something better cooking in the kitchen. Here's to your long-term financial health!

It’s All About Free Cash Flow – Walgreens Cuts Its Payout
Image: Walgreens’ shares have been under consistent pressure for years, and a turnaround is not guaranteed. Today, January 4, Walgreens announced that it would slash its quarterly dividend payment to $0.25 per share, a 48% decrease. This should not be surprising to members. Walgreens’ Dividend Cushion ratio stood at -0.3 (negative 0.3), and we hope members have avoided this catastrophe of a Dividend Aristocrat. A Dividend Cushion ratio below 1 signals increased long-term risk to the payout, while a firmly negative Dividend Cushion ratio signals heightened risk. Our cash-based dividend growth process has led to outperformance in the Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio the past couple years, while other areas have suffered, and it has also shown to be useful in predicting dividend cuts. Walgreens is now one of more than 50 companies across our coverage universe in recent years where the Dividend Cushion ratio has warned of significant risk to the sustainability of the dividend in advance of the cut.

Can Things Really Stay This Good?
"Large cap growth is booming. Small cap value is trailing. Dividend payers are stagnating. The markets are making a lot of sense again. But I do have my worries. When things are going this well, some market choppiness is probably in the cards. The S&P 500 is now bumping up against the high end of its downtrend, so the remainder of this year will likely see some increased volatility. On the back of Nvidia’s momentum and the great promise of artificial intelligence, however, I wonder if the first half of 2024 will be awesome followed by a very difficult back half of 2024 as some of my concerns finally catch up to the markets. But that just might be at the time the Fed starts cutting rates." -- Brian Nelson, CFA

Use Both the Dividend Cushion Ratio (Probability of a Dividend Cut) and the Qualitative Dividend Ratings in Your Assessment of the Payout
The Dividend Cushion ratio ranks companies on the probability of a dividend cut in the longer run, while the qualitative ratings in part assess the outlook for the health of the payout in the near term in the context of management’s willingness to preserve and raise the payout. Since the systematic application of the Dividend Cushion ratio across our coverage in 2012, the Dividend Cushion ratio has forewarned readers of approximately 50 dividend cuts. We estimate its efficacy at ~90% at identifying the risks of a dividend cut in advance of the event.
