Alphabet (Google) and eBay Power Best Ideas Newsletter Portfolio!

It’s no secret that the Internet and the companies that operate within the Internet space are always changing. There must be continuous innovation and re-discovery to keep up with the competition to amaze society with the next great development. Consumers have become accustomed to many of the Internet giants doing just that, pushing the envelope and enriching their lives with a better, faster, or more convenient way of content consumption. One of the many struggles that Internet-based entities have is not only how to create these new products, devices, or programs, but also how to monetize such breakthrough endeavors successfully. In a fast-changing environment, it is never easy to deliver sustainable, profitable and innovative growth. Let’s take a look at … Read more

New Adds: One Name at a Deep Discount and Another Long-time Favorite

Shown above: The carnage in the S&P 500. One of the most important measures that we strive to portray is balance. In our recent writings, we’ve demonstrated a very bearish slant on recent developments, and we still hold those views, but our actions within the newsletter portfolios are also very important in understanding how we react to such views. As we’ve outlined many a time before, global economic developments and US equity markets are not always inextricably linked, meaning that there could be times–seemingly more often than not–when the economy is heading south and equity markets hold up fairly well or even advance, and vice versa. Part of the core Valuentum process, however, centers on finding undervalued stocks and letting … Read more

Disney’s Disappointment

On August 4, media giant and consumer spending bellwether Walt Disney (DIS) put up decent fiscal third-quarter results, but concerns about the future of pay-TV left investors a bit cautious on its outlook. We don’t expect a material change to our $94 per share fair value estimate of the company (we have been far below the market price of $120+), and we point to most of the sell off as profit-taking following a very strong multi-year share-price run. During the fiscal third-quarter (ended June 27, 2015), revenue leapt to $13.1 billion from $12.5 billion in the year-ago period (a 5% increase), while diluted earnings per share advanced at a nice 13% clip, to $1.45 per share. On display yet again … Read more

Google Shows Why It Has Been a Best Idea

Sometimes valuation is its own catalyst. That’s what we think has happened to Google (GOOG, GOOGL). This isn’t our first note on Google; the search giant was added to the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio October 2012 at ~$340. Shares are approaching $700 at present. As with all of the holdings in the newsletter portfolios, they represent our best ideas at any given time. Image Source: Google Google’s financial profile continues to be one of the best in our coverage universe. A cash balance of nearly $70 billion showcases the firm’s tremendous financial flexibility; its short and long-term debt was just over $5 billion at the end of the second quarter. Cash flow generating from operating activities expanded nicely on a … Read more

Best Ideas Newsletter Holdings Surge

It’s hard for us to not be able to recommend stocks to you. That’s not what we do. We’re not a financial advisor, so we can never tell you what to buy or sell. This is not only the responsible thing to do, but it is also the law. We can’t possibly know your personal financial goals or risk tolerances. We do our best, however, to highlight our business analysis and the market mispricings that we see. Stocks that we pound the table on are included in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio. Stocks that we like as dividend growth ideas are included in the Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio. We’ll be adopting a new designation for these companies in lieu of … Read more

Friday Evening News

Square to Go Public According to Forbes, San Francisco based mobile payment company, Square, is expected to go public sometime in 2015. In fact, sources close to the situation report that the firm is expected to file a confidential registration statement very soon, if it hasn’t happened already. Under the JOBS Act, emerging, growing companies can file for an IPO confidentially if they meet certain requirements, including having less than $1 billion in annual revenue. Internal debate over the ideal time for the firm’s IPO has clouded the situation, as has the appointment of co-founder and CEO Jack Dorsey as Twitter’s (TWTR) interim CEO. Also this week, Square launched a new credit card and phone reader designed to allow businesses … Read more

The Invincible S&P 500?

This is the performance of the S&P 500 (SPY) since the March 2009 panic bottom. It’s incredible, to say the least. US stocks, as measured by the S&P 500 have more than tripled since the doldrums of the Financial Crisis, and for those of us that lived and breathed the markets during every day of the Financial Crisis, the lack of volatility and the ongoing, steady advance seemingly month after month during the past 6-plus years have been incredibly peculiar–and perhaps contradictorily–less-than-comforting. Any market that sets prices on the buying and selling behavior of a wide-variety of participants with differing views shouldn’t be so coordinated and one directional. It seems unnatural, or at the very least, unusual. While others are … Read more

Twitter’s Valuation Enigma

Here come the technicians — all aboard Twitter’s (TWTR) stock! Fortunately, we know better than to play the greater fool game. Enthusiasts will talk about how Twitter’s revenue doubled in its calendar fourth quarter and how the firm earned a whopping dozen pennies per share on a non-GAAP basis, exceeding expectations, but that’s not what’s going on. The reality is that Twitter posted a $125 million net loss in the fourth quarter and a $578 million net loss for the full year, both on a GAAP basis. It did so with 288 million monthly active users (MAUs), and that number is only growing 20%. The reality is that even after all the adjustments to arrive at 2014 adjusted EBITDA of … Read more

Google’s Cash Is Real

Which company ended 2014 with total cash of $64.4 billion and short and long-term debt of $5.2 billion? If you read the title, you can probably guess it without much difficulty: Google (GOOG, GOOGL). Focusing purely on beats and misses of accounting earnings-per-share ignores one of the most important financial statements: the balance sheet. Not considering the financial health of a company, and specifically a firm’s net cash position (its total cash less total debt) is similar to ignoring an individual’s savings account and obligations when calculating his/her net worth. It just doesn’t make any sense. Yet, the industry loves throwing multiples on accounting earnings with little regard to a company’s net cash or net debt position. Mr. Market’s love … Read more
