Making chemicals is a cyclical and energy-intensive business, with volatile oil/gas prices influencing feedstock, operation, and transportation costs. Specialty providers can carve out niches, but commodity chemicals producers are largely undifferentiated, making it impossible to gain a sustainable competitive edge.
