Target and Non-GAAP Earnings

Image Source: Mike Mozart Another day of earnings — another bad day for retail. May 18 brought a disappointing first-quarter report from retail bellwether Target (TGT) that sent the prices of it and most of its big box brethren including WalMart (WMT), Best Buy (BBY), and hhgregg (HGG) lower on the session, the latter two lower due to weakness in Target’s electronics vertical during the period. We’re reiterating our $71 per share fair value estimate of Target at the time of this writing. Except perhaps home improvement retailers Lowe’s (LOW) and Home Depot (HD), which continue to post desirable comparable store sales increases (+7.3% and +6.5% in the first quarter, respectively), and arguably the auto retailers, including AutoZone (AZO) and … Read more

Best Buy and GameStop Limp Into Holiday Season

The seasonality of specialty retailers Best Buy (BBY) and GameStop (GME) is no secret, and both are depending on strong holiday shopping to buoy full-year results. Let’s take a look at recent performance to get a feel for how both are trending heading into the holidays. Electronic sales remain a bright spot, so we’re paying very close attention to what’s flying off the shelves and what’s not, but with all the promotional activity going on, the biggest question is whether margins will hold up. In the third quarter of fiscal 2016, ended October 31, Best Buy reported total revenue falling 2.4% from the year-ago period to ~$8.8 billion. Comparable sales grew 0.8% (down from the 2.9% pace in last year’s … Read more

Beginning of BlackBerry Turnaround?

Last January, we were puzzled by the situation surrounding BlackBerry (BBRY), and judging by the volatility in shares, many other investors were as well. The firm denied rumors that it would be purchased for a substantial premium by competitor Samsung (SSNLF) in hopes to continue its efforts to create a larger, more diverse portfolio to compete with Apple (AAPL); BlackBerry continues to bet on its ability to use its own patent portfolio to facilitate a turnaround, even if tying the knot may still be the easy way out. In any case, the possibility that such a turnaround has finally begun has increased…maybe. In early November, BlackBerry completed the acquisition of secure mobile communications leader Good Technology for $425 million in … Read more

China Eases to Support Country’s Stock Bubble; US Markets Cheer Behavior?

Roughly $4.5 trillion has evaporated from the Chinese markets (FXI) since the middle of June – real, tangible wealth that no longer exists. Equities on mainland Chinese exchanges still trade at a median reported earnings multiple of 60+ times, according to Bloomberg. After direct government intervention in the country’s markets failed, China has now moved to cut interest rates and reduce bank reserve requirements, and this somehow has the US markets cheering. Does such irrational behavior by US investors finally mark the peak? Here are 5 observations worth noting. 1. The Financial and Capital Markets are Fragile If the Financial Crisis of 2008-2009 taught this generation anything, it was a lesson in the fragility of the financial and capital markets … Read more

eBay – PayPal Split

Under previous but subsiding pressure from Carl Icahn and other shareholders, eBay (EBAY) announced last September that it would separate its payments business PayPal in July of this year. Now that July is here, we wanted to remind members of the split and explain what it means for the holdings in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio. On July 17, eBay shareholders will receive one share of PayPal under the ticker PYPL for each share of eBay owned. We will be launching coverage of PayPal shortly after it becomes an independent, publicly-traded company. The separation of eBay and PayPal will make eBay leaner and more efficient while greatly increasing the potential for expansion of PayPal within the booming mobile payments market. … Read more

Apple: Quality from Its Core

Image Source: Eric Wüstenhagen On April 27, Apple (AAPL) reported record numbers for its second quarter of fiscal year 2015. Record second-quarter sales of the iPhone and Mac, and best-ever performance from the App Store drove revenue growth of 27% on a year-over-year basis, resulting in $58 billion in revenue. In addition to the significant top-line growth, EPS increased to $2.33 per diluted share, an increase of 40% over the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was higher than expected, at 40.8%, and cash flow from operations also reached a second-quarter high at $19.1 billion. Apple noted that 69% of the quarterly revenue was provided by international sales.  Management announced a plan to increase its capital-return program by more than 50% by the … Read more

Thanksgiving Weekend Sales Were Weak…

According to preliminary survey results released Sunday by the National Retail Federation, retail sales during the Thanksgiving weekend tumbled 11% to $50.9 billion from $57.4 billion during the same weekend last year. Executives are having a difficult time explaining the sharp drop off in retail sales (RTH), given similar aggressive strategies and promotions as previous years, but we think there are a few reasons for the hefty decline. For one, the lure of the post-Thanksgiving “mad-rush” may be wearing off, and the emerging “negative” social stigma of those willing to shop (instead of resting with family) coupled with those who believe they are “being forced to work” during the holiday (see Walmart strike) without fair wages may be turning off … Read more

Best Buy Beats in Third Quarter

Best Buy (BBY) has been marked for dead for years. The demise of Circuit City and strategic concerns about excess floor space are two of the biggest red flags for a business model such as that of Best Buy. But the dagger in the Best Buy long thesis has always been that the company is merely a showroom where consumers flock to in order to try out new gadgets only to buy them at online competitors such as Amazon (AMZN) or eBay (EBAY) for a discount. Best Buy revealed in its third-quarter results, however, that it is handling the tumultuous competitive market quite well, and we think the firm’s fundamental resilience speaks to the general health of the brick-and-mortar big … Read more
