In the News: Sears Nears Bankruptcy, Luxury Apparel Weakens, Fastenal Reports, and Financial Tech Stocks Take Hit
In what was a long-time coming, Sears looks to finally be succumbing to the pressures of the brick-and-mortar retailing business. It won’t be the last big-name retailer to fail, and it certainly wasn’t the first. Luxury stocks are reeling as a result of worries in China. Financial tech stocks gave back a fraction of their huge gains more recently, as investors size up credit risk at this stage of the economic cycle. We continue to believe financial tech is the place to be, however, with PayPal and Visa as two of our top considerations.

Best Ideas Newsletter Portfolio Not Bad Thus Far in 2018
Part of what we take pride in at Valuentum is telling things how they are. If things are going great, we let you know. If things aren’t going as good as they could be, we don’t hold back. In the year of crypto and cannabis, 2018 hasn’t been the best year for the simulated Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio, but it hasn’t been bad either.

In the News: Tesla’s Musk Charged with Securities Fraud; Facebook’s Security Issue
We continue to stay as far away from Tesla as possible. The company’s stock could still crater even more. It does not have a firm foundation at all. Facebook, despite being under continuous and tremendous scrutiny, is operating on a firm foundation, however. We continue to like shares of the social media giant, despite a recently-disclosed security problem. The more Facebook beefs up security and augments its platform, the bigger its competitive advantages become, as the entry costs for new entrants become even more insurmountable.

Midstreams Going C-Corp, Should SEC Disallow the Measure Distributable Cash Flow?
It’s important to differentiate the concept of enterprise free cash flow valuation and the idea of capital-market dependence. The uncertainty of the MLP business model remains, as it is clear operators are shunning the MLP business model preferring C-Corps instead. According to work from Global X Funds, now 40% of the energy infrastructure market cap consists of C-Corps, up considerably from just 15% at the end of 2014. Though many simplifications have come with implied distribution cuts, the primary reason for the rise in C-Corps across the midstream space has been the rationalizing of excess MLP valuations to enterprise free cash flow assessments. We encourage the SEC to consider disallowing the use of distributable cash flow, as it is confusing to investors.

Dividend Growth: Capital Preservation Remains Key
Image Shown: Since mid-June 2015, the performance of an ETF tracking the midstream MLP industry (AMLP) has collapsed while the performance of an ETF tracking the S&P 500 (SPY) industry has surged. The Valuentum dividend methodology continues to identify weeds that may overrun a beautiful garden of stocks forming your portfolio. Part of the Valuentum dividend methodology is helping to identify in advance those companies at risk of a dividend cut, as once the payment is slashed, not only is the income stream reduced but capital may be permanently impaired.
