Best Idea Dollar General Beats Consensus Estimates and Raises Guidance in the Face of Substantial Headwinds
Image Shown: Dollar General Corporation’s GAAP net sales rose in the first quarter of fiscal 2022 on a year-over-year basis due to growth in its net store count. Image Source: Dollar General Corporation – May 2022 8-K SEC Filing. As a discount retailer, Dollar General is contending with myriad headwinds though its underlying business is holding up quite well. We continue to view its capital appreciation upside potential quite favorably, and its dividend program offers incremental upside potential. Shares of DG yield ~1.0% as of this writing. Apr 19, 2022
AT&T and Warner Bros. Discovery Go Their Separate Ways
Image Shown: AT&T Inc is spending heavily to grow its 5G wireless network while expanding the reach of its broadband footprint. Image Source: AT&T Inc – March 2022 Analyst & Investor Day Event Presentation. On April 8, AT&T Inc closed the merger of the WarnerMedia business with Discovery to create a powerhouse in the media and entertainment industry after then-Discovery shareholders voted to approve the deal on March 11. The new entity, Warner Bros. Discovery Inc, is home to various streaming services (HBO Max, discovery+, CNN+) along with linear and premium TV channels (Discovery Channel, HBO, TNT, HGTV, CNN, Animal Planet, Adult Swim, Cartoon Network). Warner Bros. Discovery began trading on the NASDAQ stock exchange on April 11 with shareholders of AT&T receiving 0.241917 shares of WBD for each share of T they held at closing. Part of this process involved Discovery, now Warner Bros. Discovery, consolidating its share class structure. In return for spinning off its WarnerMedia unit, AT&T received $40.4 billion in cash and the retention of certain WarnerMedia debt. Let's dig more into this separation in this note. Mar 10, 2022
AT&T’s WarnerMedia Unit and Discovery Are Close to Finalizing Their Blockbuster Merger
Image Shown: Announced back in May 2021, the blockbuster merger of AT&T Inc’s WarnerMedia unit with Discovery Inc is expected to close in the second quarter of 2022. Image Source: AT&T Inc & Discovery Inc – May 2021 IR Presentation. The blockbuster merger of WarnerMedia, currently a part of AT&T Inc, with Discovery Inc. is getting closer to completion. On March 11, Discovery shareholders voted on whether to proceed with the transaction. AT&T does not need to secure shareholder approval through a vote to close the transaction. AT&T intends to reduce its annualized dividend to $1.11 per share ($0.2775 per share on a quarterly basis) down from $2.08 per share currently ($0.52 per share on a quarterly basis) after the merger closes. This pending payout cut has stung investors, as has AT&T’s deal making over the past decade. If everything goes as planned, WarnerMedia and Discovery are set to close their merger during the second quarter of 2022. Let's dig more into the details of this deal. Feb 10, 2022
Best Idea Disney Rebounding Nicely; Shares Look Cheap
Image Shown: Shares of The Walt Disney Company strengthened February 9 in the wake of the media and entertainment giant's latest earnings report. We include shares of DIS as an idea in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio. On February 9, The Walt Disney Company reported first-quarter fiscal 2022 earnings (period ended January 1, 2022) that smashed past both consensus top- and bottom-line estimates. A sharp rebound at its ‘Disney Parks, Experiences and Products’ unit impressed investors and shares of DIS are strengthening nicely in the wake of its latest earnings report. We are big fans of Disney and include shares of DIS as an idea in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio. Our fair value estimate stands at $179 per share of Disney with room for upside as the high end of our fair value estimate range sits at $219 per share. Shares are currently trading at ~$155 each at the time of this writing. Jan 23, 2022
Netflix’s Subscriber Growth Is Slowing Down, Competition Heating Up
Image Shown: Netflix Inc’s paid subscriber base is expected to grow at a slower pace in the near term compared to the performance seen in recent years. Image Source: Netflix Inc – Shareholder letter covering the fourth quarter of 2021. On January 20, Netflix reported fourth-quarter 2021 earnings after the bell. The video streaming giant met consensus top-line estimates and beat consensus bottom-line estimates last quarter as original content such as the South Korean TV show Squid Game (released September 2021) proved to be quite popular in markets around the globe and helped Netflix retain interest in its service. During Netflix’s latest earnings call, management noted that the violent Squid Game TV show had been renewed for a second season when asked by an analyst about the issue. However, the near-term guidance Netflix provided in conjunction with its latest earnings update signaled that growth in its paid subscriber base was expected to slow down in the first quarter of 2022 on both a year-over-year and sequential basis. During regular trading hours on January 21, shares of NFLX were pummeled. Jan 22, 2022
Don’t Throw the Baby Out with the Bathwater
Image: Erica Nicol. Junk tech should continue to collapse, but the stylistic area of large cap growth and big cap tech should remain resilient. Moderately elevated levels of inflation coupled with interest rates hovering at all-time lows isn’t a terrible combination. In fact, it’s not bad at all. The markets are digesting the huge gains of the past few years so far in 2022, and the excesses in ARKK funds, crypto, SPACs, and meme stocks are being rid from the system. Our best ideas are “outperforming” the very benchmarks that are outperforming everyone else. The BIN portfolio is down 6.4% and the DGN portfolio is down 3.2% year to date. The SPY is down 7.8%, while the average investor may be doing much worse. Our timing to exit some very speculative ideas in the Exclusive publication has been impeccable. Beware of “best-fitted” backtest data regarding sequence of return risks. Research is to help you navigate the future, not the past. We remain bullish on stocks for the long haul and grow more and more excited as our simulated newsletter portfolios continue to hold up very well. Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water. Stick with the largest, strongest growth names. We still like large cap growth and big cap tech, though we are tactical overweight in the largest energy stocks (e.g. XOM, CVX, XLE). The latest short idea in the Exclusive publication has collapsed aggressively since highlight January 9, and we remain encouraged by the resilience of ideas in the High Yield Dividend Newsletter portfolio and ESG Newsletter portfolio. Our options idea generation remains ongoing. Jan 21, 2022
Valuentum's Brian Nelson in CFA Institute's 'Enterprising Investor'
"The DCF model is not only relevant to today’s market, it remains an absolute necessity." -- Enterprising Investor Dec 26, 2021
VIDEO/TRANSCRIPT: 2021 Valuentum Exclusive Call: Inflation Is Good
Valuentum's President Brian Michael Nelson, CFA, explains why investors should not fear inflation, why government agencies such as the Fed and Treasury are prioritizing something other than price discovery, why the 10-year Treasury rate is a must-watch metric, and why Valuentum prefers the moaty constituents in large cap growth due to their net cash rich balance sheets, tremendous free cash flow generating potential, and secular growth tailwinds. Valuentum Weekly: Nothing Surprising, Well-Positioned!
Image source: Cathie Wood's flagship ETF, the ARK Innovation ETF (ARKK) has fallen more than 40% from its 52-week high. This is nothing short of a complete and utter bloodbath for such an actively-managed fund, in our view. We note this for context. We're not just talking about one or two or five stocks that are down 40% from 52-week highs, but the *entire fund.* Investors have to keep things in perspective. It's perfectly reasonable within the context of a portfolio to have a few stocks off 10%, 20%, or maybe even 50% from all-time highs. However, if your entire portfolio is down 40%+ from 52-week highs, you're doing something wrong. We're finally getting a shake out of the substantial excesses in the market. Entities such as DocuSign are down more than 40% during the trading session December 3, 2021. All-star funds such as the ARK Innovation ETF with well-known fund managers are down over 40% from all-time highs. It's a bloodbath out there if you're not positioned correctly. I can only imagine the sheer panic that's going on right now. It's laughable, but we sometimes get flak if we have one or two or five companies in a couple portfolios of 20-40 stocks that trail the index. My goodness, what must these investors then be saying to fund managers who are down 40%+ from 52-week highs, and whose funds are down 20%-30% on the year when the S&P 500 is up over 20%. It's clear that Valuentum customers demand a lot more from us than even the best, highest-profile managers out there, and we appreciate that. Thank you. A lot of the traditional IBD and Motley Fool stocks look to be stumbling as well. But we're sitting pretty at Valuentum, and here's why. Nov 30, 2021
We Remain Bullish on Disney’s Capital Appreciation Upside Potential
Image Shown: Shares of The Walt Disney Company have shifted lower over the past month, though are still bullish on its capital appreciation upside. Our fair value estimate sits at $192 per share of Disney. The Walt Disney Company reported fourth-quarter earnings for fiscal 2021 (period ended October 2, 2021) on November 10 that missed consensus top- and bottom-line estimates. While the company’s ‘Disney Parks, Experiences and Products’ segment (includes its theme parks and resorts operations) staged an impressive turnaround last fiscal quarter, its ‘Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution’ segment (includes its video streaming businesses) grew at a slower pace than expected. Shares of Disney sold off after its latest earnings report, though we remain confident that the company’s free cash flow growth outlook remains stellar and continue to view Disney’s capital appreciation upside potential quite favorably. Disney is included as an idea in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio. Latest News and Media The High Yield Dividend Newsletter, Best Ideas
