2 Recent IPOs: Surveying SurveyMonkey and Sounding the Alarm on Sonos
Valuentum has an expansive stock research coverage universe. We don’t cover every company on the market, however. We include three new ideas outside of our coverage universe each month in the Exclusive publication--an income idea, a capital appreciation idea, and a short-idea consideration. In this article, let’s cover two companies that aren’t in our coverage universe but should be on your radar. Both are recent IPOs. Feb 4, 2019

Let’s take a look at some of the top stories around the markets February 4. Jan 2, 2019
Here It Comes… Apple’s Shot Across the Bow
Image Source: Tinh tế Photo. Apple surprised the market by issuing first-quarter 2019 guidance below expectations. The company pointed to weakness in China as the main culprit. We continue to expect heightened levels of volatility, and investors in key American icons that might be impacted by consumer backlash in China should be on high alert. No changes to the simulated newsletter portfolios as a result of the news. Oct 10, 2018
In the News: Sears Nears Bankruptcy, Luxury Apparel Weakens, Fastenal Reports, and Financial Tech Stocks Take Hit
In what was a long-time coming, Sears looks to finally be succumbing to the pressures of the brick-and-mortar retailing business. It won’t be the last big-name retailer to fail, and it certainly wasn’t the first. Luxury stocks are reeling as a result of worries in China. Financial tech stocks gave back a fraction of their huge gains more recently, as investors size up credit risk at this stage of the economic cycle. We continue to believe financial tech is the place to be, however, with PayPal and Visa as two of our top considerations. Jun 13, 2018
Private Equity Likely Interested in GameStop As Netflix Shocks Gaming Industry
Netflix may have taken the initial steps to enter the video-gaming market. Even as the digital streaming of games may have already signaled the death knell of GameStop’s lucrative physical used-game business, that Netflix may be moving into video games may further truncate not only GameStop’s longevity, but also have ramifications across the entire video-gaming landscape. Private equity may be interested in GameStop, nonetheless. May 23, 2018
Tiffany Rallies 20%+ on 1Q’18 Report; Positive Read-Through for China, High-End Retail Margins
Tiffany’s first-quarter 2018 results were from another planet! Strong increases in comparable store sales almost across the board, blowing by consensus estimates, and the company’s free cash flow outlook has only improved. The read-through is significantly positive for aspirational and luxury players, in our view, and Ralph Lauren’s gross-margin improvement during its quarterly release bodes well for many brands across most of the high-end apparel space. Foreign tourism and high-end consumer spending remain very strong on the basis of Tiffany’s quarterly results, and geopolitical concerns did not impact the breakneck pace of jewelry sales in China or the Korean Peninsula. It’s hard to imagine Tiffany having a better first quarter than it did. Mar 22, 2018
Trump Targets China with Tariffs
Image: Shanghai, China (December 2016), Andrey Filippov. Stock markets in the US are slowly building in the prospect of retaliation (a “trade war”) from China, as a result of President Trump’s new tariffs. We maintain our view that the stock market has been frothy for some time, and the recent volatility may just be the beginning of a reversion to normalized valuations, with or without concerns about global trade. Shopping for Income Within Retail in a Digital World
Image Source: Mike Mozart. The 2017 holiday shopping season has shown that e-commerce has never been stronger and it will only continue to grow. But there is still potential for income generation among more traditional retailers. Investors must be tremendously discerning in the retail area, however, as margin, and ultimately free cash flow, pressures remain prevalent. We like Walmart, Target, Costco as income ideas in the broader retail space, but TJX Companies and Best Buy may be worth a look, too. We're avoiding the department stores and teen retail like the plague, regardless of their Dividend Cushion ratios. Aug 8, 2017
Discovery-Scripps Joining Forces to Take on the Changing Digital Media Landscape
Image Source: Lwp Kommunikáció. Discovery Communications has agreed to acquire Scripps Networks, but will it be enough for the two to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving--and consolidating--media landscape? Jun 26, 2017
