Valuentum Weekly: Yields on New Series I Savings Bonds Have Soared!
The Dow Jones, S&P 500 and NASDAQ futures are all indicated up Sunday night (March 13), but that may not mean much when trading kicks off tomorrow. The start to 2022 has been one of the worst stretches during the past decade, but broader market indexes still aren't down much, even after factoring in several expected rate hikes by the Fed and economic sanctions on Russia due to the war in Ukraine. According to data from Seeking Alpha, the S&P 500 (SPY), Dow Jones Industrial Average (DIA), and Nasdaq (QQQ) are off ~12%, ~10%, and ~19% so far this year, respectively. However, this weakness compares to (and is inclusive of) incredible 5-year price-only returns on the SPY, DIA, and QQQ of ~77%, ~58%, ~146%, respectively, so it's hard for stock investors to be disappointed in much of anything, even if all they were able to do was match the returns of the S&P 500 the past 5 years. Many, however, unfortunately, diluted those 5-year returns with hefty bond and international exposure and sometimes large AUM fees, so the weakness in 2022 is probably more painful for some than perhaps it should be. In any case, we remain bullish on stocks for the long run, with a heavy bent toward large cap growth and big cap tech with tactical overweight "positions" in big cap energy. Feb 10, 2022
Chipotle Sees Bigger Unit Growth Opportunity in North America, Continued Pricing Power
Image: Chipotle’s shares look like they are poised to breakout of a downtrend on news that its long-term unit restaurant opportunity is bigger than expected and that its pricing power remains intact. Chipotle's fast-casual focus and premium food offerings coupled with its Chipotlane rollouts and its breakfast “call option” are a few things that give the company a runway for continued strength that may be unprecedented by an established brand, particularly as it sees an even greater opportunity for unit development in North America than it did before. Because it serves a higher-end fast-casual customer, we think product pricing ahead of inflation won’t be an issue (helping to augment margins), and we’re reiterating our fair value estimate of ~$1,640 per share, above where shares are currently trading at the time of this writing (~$1,580 per share). A more optimistic take on Chipotle could see shares reach the higher end of our fair value estimate range of ~$1,970 per share. Jan 6, 2022
Best Idea Domino’s Has a Massive Growth Runway
Image Source: Domino’s Pizza Inc – Third Quarter of Fiscal 2021 IR Earnings Presentation. Domino’s Pizza runs a great business. Most of its store locations are franchised (~98% as of September 2021), meaning inflation cost headwinds fall more squarely on its franchisees. The company has put up great same store sales performance on both a domestic and international basis in recent fiscal years, and it continues to have an immense growth runway. Domino’s is a stellar generator of free cash flow, too, thanks to its asset light revenue model. We include shares of Domino’s as an idea in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio. Oct 24, 2021
Best Idea Chipotle Mexican Grill’s Growth Runway is Enormous
Image Shown: Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc’s restaurant level unit economics continued to improve in the third quarter of 2021, supporting the company’s growth trajectory. Image Source: Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc – Third Quarter of 2021 Non-GAAP Reconciliation Presentation. On October 21, Chipotle Mexican Grill reported third-quarter 2021 earnings that beat both consensus top- and bottom-line estimates. Comparable restaurant sales grew 15% year-over-year last quarter as Chipotle’s e-commerce business held up well, with digital sales up 9% year-over-year (representing 43% of its total sales during this period), while customers resumed in-store dining activities in earnest. We liked what we saw in Chipotle’s latest earnings report. Shares of CMG are included as an idea in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio. Jul 26, 2021
Chinese Stocks Getting Hammered
Image shown: A confluence of factors are driving Chinese stocks lower, not the least of which is heightened regulatory concerns.Investing is really simple. You don’t need to find terribly underfollowed ideas to do well, just mispriced ones. For example, Alphabet is up over 80% the past 52 weeks, and the company has been a top weighting in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio for some time. Facebook has also been an outperformer. There’s no need to make things complicated. Focus on undervalued stocks on a DCF basis that have strong market support through relative strength or a solid technical breakout--and stay away from those net-debt heavy, low valuation multiple value traps! Best Idea Chipotle Rockets Higher!
Image Shown: We include Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc an as idea in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio. On July 21, shares of CMG surged higher after the firm reported a stellar earnings report after the market close on July 20. In our April 2021 article covering the company, we highlighted how Chipotle’s management team sees room for the firm to more than double its restaurant unit count in the coming years. Chipotle’s growth runway is immense. The company’s second-quarter earnings report was stellar, and the market continues to warm up to Chipotle’s promising long-term growth story. We are big fans of Chipotle and expect that the firm’s free cash flows will continue to grow at a steady clip over the coming years. Apr 30, 2021
Domino’s Pizza Well-Positioned for Long Run
Image Shown: Domino’s has the right business model for the long haul. Unit economics are fantastic for franchisees, while same-store sales continue to benefit from first-mover digital initiatives. Earnings per share growth has been stellar for the past decade. Image Source: April 2021 Presentation. Domino’s has the right business model for the digital economy, and we expect robust net unit growth and retail sales growth in the mid-to-high single-digit range over the next few years. This asset-light, free-cash-flow generating franchisor is stealing market share hand over fist, while it drives robust earnings expansion and buys back its own stock (it has a $1 billion repurchase authorization, as of February 2021). Everything seems in place for Domino’s to remain atop the global quick-service pizza industry, as operational simplicity is the name of the game. Investors need to pay attention to Domino’s net debt load, but we see little in the way of this fantastic growth story. The firm remains one of our favorite restaurant ideas and a holding in the simulated Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio. Apr 26, 2021
Chipotle Could Double the Number of Restaurants in the Long Run
Image Source: Valuentum. Chipotle’s first-quarter results were solid, and we’re sticking with the idea in the simulated Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio. The company’s long-term total restaurant opportunity is tremendous, and we view its digital initiatives as top-notch as it continues to grow comparable store sales nicely. With one of the most innovative CEOs at the helm, Chipotle’s shares continue to be enticing, in our view. Mar 10, 2021
Chipotle Improving Its Digital Menu to Support Its E-commerce Growth Runway
Image Shown: Over the past year, shares of Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc have been on an upward tear, supported by the restaurant’s improving omni-channel selling capabilities. Shares of Chipotle Mexican Grill surged higher during normal trading hours March 9 after the firm announced it was adding customizable quesadilla offerings to its digital menu in the US and Canada starting March 11. This offering is only available for customers ordering while using Chipotle’s digital platforms (potentially due to the longer preparation times) and will likely require new cooking equipment at the company’s restaurants. The company offers both home delivery and curbside/drive-thru pickup services (including its order ahead and pickup services) through its digital platform. We continue to be huge fans of Chipotle and include the company as an idea in our Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio. Feb 8, 2021
Stock Market Outlook for 2021
2020 was one from the history books and a year that will live on in infamy. That said, we are excited for the future as global health authorities are steadily putting an end to the public health crisis created by COVID-19, aided by the quick discovery of safe and viable vaccines. Tech, fintech, and payment processing firms were all big winners in 2020, and we expect that to continue being the case in 2021. Digital advertising, cloud-computing, and e-commerce activities are set to continue dominating their respective fields. Cybersecurity demand is moving higher and the constant threats posed by both governments (usually nations that are hostile to Western interests) and non-state actors highlights how crucial these services are. Retailers with omni-channel selling capabilities are well-positioned to ride the global economic recovery upwards. Green energy firms will continue to grow at a brisk pace in 2021, though the oil & gas industry appears ready for a comeback. The adoption of 5G wireless technologies and smartphones will create immense growth opportunities for smartphone makers, semiconductor players and telecommunications giants. Video streaming services have become ubiquitous over the past decade with room to continue growing as households “cut the cord” and instead opt for several video streaming packages. We’re not too big of fans of old industrial names given their capital-intensive nature relative to capital-light technology or fintech, but there are select names that have appeal. Cryptocurrencies have taken the market by storm as we turn the calendar into 2021, but the traditional banking system remains healthy enough to withstand another shock should it be on the horizon. Our fair value estimate of the S&P 500 remains $3,530-$3,920, but we may still be on a roller coaster ride for the year. Here’s to a great 2021!
