Best Idea Booking Holdings Soars!
Image: Booking Holdings’ free cash flow conversion is about as good as it gets. The company remains a key idea in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio. Image Source: Booking Holdings. Booking Holdings fits the mold of the type of companies that we’re looking for in this market environment. The company has an asset-light business model that is tied to secular growth trends, all the while it boasts a net cash position and significant free cash flow generation. The company’s outlook also speaks to continued strength as it relates to leisure demand, a key data point suggesting that the broad economic environment remains resilient despite rate increases and the erosion of excess consumer cash savings built up during the COVID-19 pandemic. The quarterly report was welcome news.

Union Pacific Outperforming North American Rail Traffic Trends But Facing Inefficiencies and Inflation Hurdles
Image Source: Union Pacific. The rail industry may have avoided a labor strike, but North American rail traffic remains under pressure, while many operators are struggling with inflationary pressures and operational inefficiencies. Union Pacific remains our favorite way to play the rails, but 2022 has been a difficult year for the firm, with free cash flow coming under pressure as capital investments have soared so far in 2022. Union Pacific garners an ‘A’ rating by Moody’s, Fitch and S&P, so we’re not too worried about its large net debt position. Shares yield ~2.4% at the time of this writing, but we’re not pulling the trigger.

Honeywell's ESG Efforts May Benefit from More Board Diversity and Moving Beyond Its Asbestos-Saddled Past
Image: Honeywell continues to put together a long resume of ESG highlights. Image Source: Honeywell’s Environmental, Social and Governance Report. Honeywell’s 100+ page Environmental Social and Governance Report for 2022 is a tremendous resource that indicates Honeywell means business when it comes to ESG-related efforts. The firm has a lot of work to do to get to carbon neutral by 2035, and we’d like to see a more diverse board and perhaps more reasonable compensation at the top, but the trajectory for ESG considerations at Honeywell is moving in the right direction. Prior asbestos-related issues weigh heavily on our ESG assessment of Honeywell, but we expect continued improvement across all areas of ESG in the years to come at the firm.

Market Whipsaw: Crypto Collapse and a Lower-than-Expected Inflation Print
Image: Uncertainty in the cryptocurrency markets has surged with concerns over the liquidity of a key exchange. Investors are weighing the spillover effects of crypto with the view that the pace of inflation may have peaked. The U.S. equity market continues to be highly volatile as it whipsaws between concerns over the health and sustainability of cryptocurrency and optimism over lower-than-feared inflation readings. We maintain our bearish/defensive stance on equities, but at the same time, we continue to be “fully-invested” across the simulated newsletter portfolios in part because we don’t want to miss out on days like today, November 10, when the markets are soaring ~2.5%-5.5% depending on which index you are monitoring. We’re also not ruling out a Santa Claus rally through the end of the year. Merry Dow Jones, as they say!
