Hasbro Is Down But Not Out, Shares Yield ~5.3%
Image: Hasbro’s shares have faced considerable pressure during the past few years. Hasbro's recently reported fourth-quarter results weren't great and showed revenue declining 23% as it experienced material weakness in its Consumer Products segment (-25%) and Entertainment division (-49%) in the quarter. On an adjusted basis, backing out large impairment charges, the firm’s operating loss came in at $50 million in the quarter, while it recorded adjusted net earnings of $0.38 per share. Hasbro continues to navigate a difficult demand environment for physical toys, but the company’s free cash flow remains robust and was in excess of cash dividends paid during 2023. Disney’s Free Cash Flow Is Expected to Surge But A Strong Recovery Is Already Priced In
Image Source: Valuentum. On November 8, Disney reported improved fourth-quarter results for its fiscal 2023. Revenue advanced 5% on a year-over-year basis in the quarter, and the firm drove non-GAAP diluted earnings per share to $0.82 from $0.30 in the prior year period. The company’s Disney+ streaming service added 7 million core customers in the quarter, and its commentary that its streaming business would reach profitability in the fourth quarter of next fiscal year was welcome. Cost savings will be key, and the executive team expects free cash flow to grow significantly in fiscal 2024 versus the most recently reported year. All of this was great news, but a massive recovery in free cash flow is already factored into its price. Our $81 fair value estimate remains unchanged. May 4, 2023
Paramount Global Cuts Payout, Dividend Cushion Ratio Caught Another!
Image Source: Paramount Global. The Dividend Cushion ratio is not a perfect predictor of dividend health and the risks of a dividend cut, but it’s a pretty darn good one. On May 4, Paramount Global missed expectations for its first-quarter 2023 results on both the top and bottom line and cut its quarterly dividend to $0.05 per quarter (was $0.24). The company’s Dividend Cushion ratio, which considers its balance sheet as well as future expectations of free cash flow relative to future expected cash dividends paid, was -2.5 (negative 2.5). Any ratio below 1 indicates growing risk to the health of the dividend, while any materially negative (below 0) ratio indicates severe risk of a dividend cut in the longer run. Jan 25, 2023

Apple iPhone Supply Disruptions Not Likely to Hurt Markets with Overall Holiday Sales Reportedly Strong

Apple's sales of the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will come in lower than expected this holiday season due to labor unrest in Zhengzhou, but holiday sales for 2022 overall look fairly solid with Adobe Analytics estimating 2.5% growth over 2021, which, itself, was a fantastic year. A prior warning about holiday sales from Target Corp. appears to have been overblown given the sales strength witnessed during Black Friday and Cyber Monday across the retail landscape this year. It may be too early to say that the markets have definitely bottomed as economic data remains inconclusive, but holiday sales so far in 2022 and an overall resilient job market are giving investors something to cheer about in what has turned into an otherwise loathsome year. Microsoft Is Buying Activision On Way to Becoming Video Game Giant

On January 18, Microsoft Corp made history by making an all-cash offer to purchase Activision Blizzard Inc for $95 per share. The boards of both companies have already approved the deal. Inclusive of Activision’s net cash position, the deal is worth $68.7 billion which makes it the largest buyout ever for a US tech firm according to CNBC. This deal is expected to close in fiscal 2023 (Microsoft’s fiscal year ends in June). Once it closes, assuming the deal pasts antitrust muster, Microsoft views the acquisition as being accretive to its non-GAAP earnings per share. Our fair value estimate of Activision will be updated to reflect a modest discount to the buyout price to incorporate the small probability the deal won't be completed due to antitrust concerns. Roblox Goes Public; Strong Balance Sheet and Expected Free Cash Flow

The video game platform company has an extensive growth runway with multiple avenues to further expand its business. We are impressed with its free cash flow generating abilities, pristine balance sheet, and strong growth rates of late. Roblox’s outlook for 2021 indicates its growth story is expected to continue this year in earnest. Capital appreciation seeking investors should take a deeper look at Roblox, though we caution that its co-founder, CEO, and chairman controls most of the company’s voting power. Nov 19, 2020
Videogaming Business Becoming More and More Attractive

As households have largely been “cocooning” indoors to ride out the ongoing coronavirus (‘COVID-19’) pandemic, demand for digitally provided entertainment options has grown considerably. NPD Group, an industry-tracking firm, estimates that US video game sales (software and hardware combined) will reach $13.4 billion in total in across November and December of this year. That would be up 24% from year-ago levels, and note this is only looking at the US market, which is estimated to have 244 million consumers of video game content according to NPD Group. Many of those consumers are considered casual video game players, playing mobile games on their smartphones and tablets, though NPD Group noted the number of more dedicated gamers (measured by hours played per week) is on the rise in both nominal and absolute terms. Mobile gaming options generally rely on in-game transactions, called microtransactions, to generate revenue. Usually those offerings include aesthetic upgrades or the ability to progress through the video game at a faster pace. For more conventional video game offerings--those normally played on PCs or consoles--video game companies have increasingly been successful in selling add-on content via high-margin digital packages (and in some instances, microtransactions have also been successfully implemented). Longer term, the rise of e-sports offers another revenue generating opportunity for companies in the video game and digital advertising world. Though a nascent part of the video game industry, initial levels of interest have been impressive. Beyond rising demand for video streaming services, demand for video games, a (usually) cost-effective entertainment option, has also held up incredibly well during the pandemic with several big video game publishers reporting strong financial results of late, too. Furthermore, Microsoft Corporation and Sony Corporation recently launched their next-generation consoles, the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, respectively. In theory, the console refresh cycle combined with growing demand for indoors entertainment options should provide the video game industry with several major growth catalysts in the coming quarters. One of the key positive attributes of the the video game publishing industry, generally speaking, is that these companies have strong balance sheets and stellar cash flow profiles (meaning a relatively modest amount of capital expenditures are required to maintain a certain level of revenues, and thus putting the firm in a position to better generate free cash flows). However, the performance of these companies can swing wildly depending on how well their blockbuster properties perform. The hit-or-miss nature of their operations has been a big reason why we haven’t added any videogame stock to the newsletter portfolios in the past, but their business models have become more and more attractive as the years have gone on. Microsoft Makes a Clever Acquisition

On September 21, Microsoft Corp announced it was acquiring ZeniMax Media, owner of the videogame developer and publisher Bethesda Softworks, for $7.5 billion in cash. Bethesda is perhaps best known for AAA franchises like Fallout and The Elder Scrolls, among other well-known franchises including DOOM, Quake, Wolfenstein, and Dishonored. Please note that Bethesda makes videogames for both seasoned and casual gamers for console, PC, and mobile devices. More recently, Bethesda has experimented with launching iterations of game titles that were previously geared towards seasoned gamers on consoles and PCs on mobile devices that are geared towards more casual gamers. This can be seen through the 2019 launch of Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls: Blades videogame on Apple iOS powered devices and devices powered by Alphabet Android. Bethesda later launch The Elder Scrolls: Blades on Nintendo's Switch console, which is a handheld device. Previously, titles within The Elder Scrolls universe such as The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim were made for consoles and PCs, and these games were geared more so towards seasoned gamers.
