December 4, 2022
Image Source: Valuentum By Brian Nelson, CFA On December 1, Dollar General Corp (DG) reported mixed third-quarter fiscal 2022 results where revenue came in slightly better than expectations on the back of same-store sales expansion of 6.8%, while GAAP earnings per share came up a bit short relative to the consensus estimate. Dollar General remains a “position” in the simulated Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio, and our fair value estimate stands at $250 per share. Many consumers are looking for ways to stretch their budgets in the current inflationary economic environment. That means cutting back on some discretionary items, but also looking for key deals across the retail landscape. Dollar General operates within a niche in the industry similar to the

Image Source: UnitedHealth By Valuentum Analysts On November 28, UnitedHealth Group (UNH) reiterated its guidance for fiscal 2022 in advance of its 2022 Investor Conference and issued what we believe to be a conservative outlook for 2023. UnitedHealth Group operates two complementary businesses, Optum, which provides technology and data to health providers to offer guidance and tools, and UnitedHealthcare, which offers health benefits. The company is a key “position” in the simulated Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio and yields ~1.2% at the time of this writing. When UnitedHealth Group reported third-quarter 2022 results October 14, “Dividend Growth Idea UnitedHealth Outperforming,”
Deere’s Incredible Pricing Power Shines Through in Fiscal Fourth Quarter
November 28, 2022
Image: Deere put up excellent fiscal fourth-quarter results for the period ending October 30, 2022. The company’s pricing power is phenomenal. Image Source: Deere By Brian Nelson, CFA On November 23, Deere & Company (DE) reported results for its fourth quarter of fiscal 2022 for the period ending October 30, 2022. We pay close attention to Deere for insights across the industrial equipment and agricultural supply chain, and things are looking resilient, despite evident pressures across the consumer discretionary arena, as revealed by Target’s (TGT) holiday outlook. Shares of Deere have soared more than 26% year-to-date during 2022, and while we like the company, we think its equity price has run too far too fast. We like our existing ideas in
Procter & Gamble’s Bright Investor Day Buoys Our Views on Stock
November 21, 2022
Image: Procter & Gamble has delivered pre-, during, and post-pandemic, and its long-term growth targets remain reasonable, in our view. Image Source: P&G By Brian Nelson, CFA Procter & Gamble (PG) is doing a lot of things right these days. Years ago, we were skeptical of management’s decision to streamline its business by reducing the number of its valuable brands to 65 from 170, but it has paid off. Over the past five years, shares of P&G have advanced more than 60%, and this excludes its nice and growing dividend payout. We liked a lot about what P&G revealed during its Investor Day November 17, and the company remains a strong consideration for both income and dividend growth investors
Target’s Holiday Outlook Sends Mixed Messages; Big Sales Data Week Ahead
November 21, 2022
Image Source: Valuentum “Nearly all of the slowdown was driven by our discretionary categories, Apparel, Home and Hardlines, as our guests became increasingly cautious in their spending in those categories at both Target and throughout the industry more broadly. So far in the month of November, trends have been largely consistent with what we were seeing at the end of October, in terms of our comp trends, the mix of sales between frequency and discretionary businesses and the focus on promotions by our guests.” – Target’s 3Q Conference Call By Brian Nelson, CFA After Walmart (WMT) reported its third-quarter earnings November 15, “Walmart Is Back on Track; Markets Looking Healthier,” we thought things were looking a bit better across the
The Case for the Valuentum Style of Investing
November 19, 2022
Originally published May 28, 2012. Abstract The benefits of value and momentum strategies on an individual basis have been well-documented in financial literature. Academic research has also concluded that a simply-constructed portfolio consisting 50% of a long-short value-oriented portfolio and 50% of a long-short momentum-oriented portfolio produces a higher Sharpe ratio and lower volatility than either value or momentum alone. We study the reasons behind this phenomenon and strive to answer the question: what are the types of stocks that drive such outperformance? Though the benefits of using a combined value and momentum approach in a portfolio management setting have been widely-accepted, we believe we are the first to identify the abnormal-return benefits of investing in a cohort of individual stocks

(CSCO) reported better than expected first-quarter fiscal 2023 results (for the period ending October 29, 2022) that beat expectations on both the top and bottom lines. The networking giant raised its revenue and adjusted earnings forecast for the fiscal year, indicating strong momentum behind its business amid a very uncertain economic backdrop for both consumers and businesses alike. We’re sticking with our fair value estimate of $50 per share for Cisco at this time. The headlines for Cisco’s first-quarter fiscal 2023 results were fantastic. For starters, the company delivered the largest quarterly revenue in its history, while
