Image: Bitcoin, technology and large cap growth have led the pack the past 5 years while pipeline MLPs, crude oil and energy stocks have fallen way behind. Large cap growth > small cap value. Cavco Industries Is an Intriguing Capital Appreciation Idea

August 5, 2021

Image Source: Cavco Industries Inc – July 2021 IR Presentation Executive Summary: Cavco Industries designs and builds manufactured homes, modular homes, and similar offerings in the US. Additionally, Cavco Industries provides insurance and financing services that cater to this market. The company’s free cash flow generating abilities are stellar, its growth runway is underpinned by strong housing prices in the US, and the firm has a fortress-like balance sheet even after taking a recently announced acquisition into account. Once the worst of the negative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic fade away, Cavco Industries’ manufacturing operations will be able to run at more “normalized” levels, thus enabling its financial performance to benefit from rising economies of scale. Demand for Cavco Industries’

Rounding Up the 2Q Earnings Reports of Some of America’s Most Recognizable Brands: Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Ford, Boeing, and Procter & Gamble

August 3, 2021

Image Source: Valuentum By Brian Nelson, CFA The world is bouncing back in a big way from the coronavirus (“COVID-19”) pandemic, and some of America’s top brands have put up impressive calendar second-quarter results. Ford’s performance may have been the most interesting from an investor perspective, and we continue to warn against Boeing in light of its weak cash-based fundamentals and the tremendous flexibility that program accounting can have with respect to GAAP financials. Though the following five companies are not included in the newsletter portfolios, they should be on your radar, especially as it relates to market-moving trends and economic information. Our favorite ideas remain in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio and Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio, which have been

Chevron Posts a Great Earnings Update, Share Repurchases to Resume

August 3, 2021

Image Shown: An overview of Chevron Corporation’s performance in the second quarter of 2021. We include shares of Chevron as an idea in both our Best Ideas Newsletter and Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolios and continue to be huge fans of the name as the global energy complex continues to recover from the worst of the coronavirus (‘COVID-19 pandemic). Image Source: Chevron Corporation – Second Quarter of 2021 IR Earnings Presentation By Callum Turcan We added shares of Chevron Corporation (CVX) as an idea to both the Best Ideas Newsletter and Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolios back on June 27, 2021 (link here). Amazon Leads Market Lower, Free Cash Flow Disappoints

July 30, 2021

Image: Amazon’s free cash flow performance was hugely disappointing during its second quarter of 2021. By Brian Nelson, CFA We were disappointed in Amazon’s (AMZN) mixed second-quarter report released after the bell July 29. The e-commerce and web services giant missed revenue expectations, while the company’s bottom-line earnings-per-share number of $15.12 came in better than the consensus figure. We find it highly ironical that Amazon’s shares are selling off on a hugely profitable quarter when years ago the Street was complaining about it bleeding red ink. Shares of Amazon are trading down to about our fair value estimate of ~$3,343 at the time of this writing; the sell-off may be deserved. Facebook, PayPal, Apple Earnings Reports and More!

July 29, 2021

Image shown: Qualcomm’s chart is looking mighty attractive. By Brian Nelson, CFA We continue to like Facebook (FB), PayPal (PYPL) and Apple (AAPL) as ideas in the Best Ideas Newsletter portfolio following their calendar second-quarter 2021 reports, released recently. Vertex Pharma (VRTX) is our favorite way to play emerging CRISPR technologies through its partnership with CRISPR Therapeutics (CRSP), and we were mighty pleased with Dividend Growth Newsletter portfolio holdings Republic Services (RSG) solid 8% dividend increase and Qualcomm’s (QCOM) impressive momentum. Facebook’s revenue soared 56% in the second quarter, and the company leveraged its operating margin to over 1000 basis points of year-over-year expansion. Both net income and diluted earnings per share more than doubled at the social media giant

Microsoft’s Dividend Is Rock Solid But Why?

July 29, 2021

Image Shown: Valuentum’s Dividend Report on Microsoft. The Dividend Cushion Ratio Deconstruction reveals the numerator and denominator of the Dividend Cushion ratio for Microsoft. At the core, the larger the numerator, or the healthier a company’s balance sheet and future free cash flow generation, relative to the denominator, or a company’s cash dividend obligations, the more durable the dividend. In the context of the Dividend Cushion ratio, Microsoft’s numerator is larger than its denominator suggesting strong dividend coverage in the future. The Dividend Cushion Ratio Deconstruction image puts sources of free cash in the context of financial obligations next to expected cash dividend payments over the next 5 years on a side-by-side comparison. Because the Dividend Cushion ratio and many

The Valuentum Buying Index’s Flow Chart

July 28, 2021

Image: The Valuentum Buying Index (VBI) flow chart. Each stock in our general operating coverage receives a systematically-applied rating. The VBI should never be used by itself. By Brian Nelson, CFA We witnessed some solid second-quarter reports from Alphabet (GOOG) (GOOGL) and Microsoft (MSFT) after the close July 27, and Facebook (FB) is trading higher in sympathy with Alphabet’s blockbuster report. We maintain our view that big cap tech and large cap growth are the areas to be, and today, we’re pounding the table on our $3,500 fair value estimate of Alphabet. Note, we raised Alphabet’s fair value estimate yesterday, and as is customary with our update cycle, the tables on the stock web page will be refreshed with updated

July 27, 2021

Image Shown: AT&T Inc’s core businesses in the wireless and fiber arenas continue to gain subscribers at a rapid pace, while its HBO/HBO Max offerings are also growing at a nice clip. Image Source: AT&T Inc – Second Quarter of 2021 IR Earnings Presentation By Callum Turcan On July 22, AT&T Inc (T) reported second quarter 2021 earnings that beat both consensus top- and bottom-line estimates. AT&T also added 174,000 net prepaid phone customers while its AT&T Fiber business added 246,000 net customers last quarter. We include shares of AT&T as

The Valuentum Buying Index as a Differentiating Factor

July 27, 2021

“No other research provider has approached mapping the market in this manner, making Valuentum’s research a differentiating factor behind your practice and a must-have for any investor.” — Brian Nelson, CFA  By Brian Nelson, CFA We have a huge day of earnings coming out today, and we’re excited about the upcoming releases at Apple (AAPL), Alphabet (GOOG) (GOOGL) and Microsoft (MSFT) after the close. Facebook (FB) is scheduled to report after the market close tomorrow, July 28. The important consideration, however, is how these reports impact our long-term forecasts, and we won’t be reading much into their share-price reaction to the reports, whether good or bad. About Our Name

But how, you will ask, does one decide what [stocks are] "attractive"? Most analysts feel they must choose between two approaches customarily thought to be in opposition: "value" and "growth,"...We view that as fuzzy thinking...Growth is always a component of value [and] the very term "value investing" is redundant.

-- Warren Buffett, Berkshire Hathaway annual report, 1992

At Valuentum, we take Buffett's thoughts one step further. We think the best opportunities arise from an understanding of a variety of investing disciplines in order to identify the most attractive stocks at any given time. Valuentum therefore analyzes each stock across a wide spectrum of philosophies, from deep value through momentum investing. And a combination of the two approaches found on each side of the spectrum (value/momentum) in a name couldn't be more representative of what our analysts do here; hence, we're called Valuentum.
