On Monday, Channel Advisor (ECOM), a leading provider of cloud-based e-commerce solutions, released its assessment of Cyber Monday:
Amazon and eBay are trending over 30% compared to last year. Google Shopping continues its gains as well. Search and CSE slowed down through the day with Search currently trending ~6% and CSE 14%. Overall it looks like Cyber Monday is (still) on track to be up over 30% compared to last year from a SSS basis, which would make it a new record day for e-commerce!
Today, the firm followed up with a few additional anecdotes and its thoughts about the Cyber Five, the five days from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday:
Amazon – Amazon is off to a strong holiday. The key days of Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday were all over 30% y/y growth which is twice the rate of e-commerce. Amazon was quite savvy managing their promotional calendar and supply/positioning of deals.
eBay – eBay’s Cyber Five was also strong coming in at ~30% for the key five days. The intra-day numbers were a bit lumpier than Amazon. eBay definitely cranked up their promotional engine from last year, primarily through the daily deal mechanism. They definitely pulled that trigger the hardest on Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

The Adobe (ADBE) Digital Index showed that Cyber Monday Internet sales advanced 16% from last year. Though this measure differs from the Channel Advisor data (above), Adobe believes Internet transactions for the five-day Thanksgiving shopping period increased 26%, which is more in-line with the Channel Advisor data. The Adobe data reveals that sales from mobile devices leapt 80% to account for 18.3% of the total. More and more consumers continue to capitalize on the convenience of the mobile revolution via smartphones and tablets.
Valuentum’s Take
We continue to be very pleased with online consumption so far this holiday season, and in particular, ongoing strength at Best Ideas portfolio holding eBay (EBAY). Both eBay and Amazon (AMZN) have performed spectacularly since Thanksgiving (see here), and we have no reason to believe the strength won’t continue through the remainder of the holiday season.
